That would have put it in competition with the B-52 and resulted in little to no sales.

Maybe you should hear an Extreme before you make a judgement like that.

But at least I'd be able to blow it off and just say its too much. I'm content. Now I'm very interested against my better judgement.

Nice Price. Too bad I am moving around so much. I would love to hear it with some good 6DJ8's or my 1965 6N1P's.

The "Beast" is back after receiving a new cooling fan. This is the amp that the Extreme circuit was derived from. With some fine Bexdix 6080 output tubes driven by an Amperex 7062 the sound is fabulous.

Especially intriguing is the amp sounds incredible with low impedence headphones. The M2Si's showed up today and this combo rocks hard. Absolutely no treble grain, glare or spotlighting .... something I have never experienced with any John version Grado. The bass

dynamics with this pairing is canon-like. Interestingly, and again, something I have never experienced .... I set the volume the same as with my senn 600's as I do with the M2Si. In the past, Grado headphones always needed more volume for equal loudness compared to my high impedence headphones. I guess this is a good indication of how much current this amp can deliver.

Look at the huge power supply caps .... and there is another plitron transformer inside the case.

You are going to like this amp. The sound is so good and these amps are a blast to tuberoll.

Earl,
You are indeed a true head fier. I had to laugh seeing that "Beast". Do you have a 50 amp dedicated service to this room? Your neighborhood must dim when kicking that thing on.

Nature has dashed any hopes of a Christmas extreme delivery.

Stay safe and warm Mikhail and Co.

Cheers to the skiers.... When you can get there.

Wow, great impressions SACD'! From the looks of things, it seems like we have are reaping the results of a bit of competition amongst our best headphone amp designers! Zana/B52/Extreme/SE slam all in 6 months? Not to mention, well known speaker amp designers with their first forays into headamps ( Blue Circle, Yamamoto, PS audio, CI Audio ). So all we need now is a new R10, K1000, HE90 and we could officially call this the start of the headphile golden age!

Just shortly: To make the list, I thought a model has to be significantly different to other SP amps; One or several of the SP officially offered options would not suffice. The order of the models in that list is loosely based on price and sometimes on complexity of the designs. However, if Mikhail, him self, indicates an ordinal scale, it feels natural to follow it.

Glod,

You've done a great service in creating that list -- I'm honored to contribute in any way. One clarification: Mikhail indicated that my amp was perhaps on a par with the Extreme Platinum. Two different flavors -- more impact in the Extreme but more refinement in the MPX. All very subjective, of course (and he was basically just thinking outloud).

Well .... I have managed to get in some sporadic listening over the Holidays. The Extreme definitely continues to impress. I am still very pleased with the soundstage in particular; the soundstage is BIG and expansive yet surprisingly precise. The dynamics and impact are first rate. The bass impact is weightier and not as tight as when using 5687's. But the bass has a more dense or solid character and still has explosiveness when required.

I dont think this amp is quite as fast sounding from the upper bass/ lower mids down (maybe quick is a better word) as the 5687 amps, being more on par with the 6bl7gt, however, the sound is bigger and has plenty of PRAT. Plus, I do have a lot of gain tubes left to try with the Extreme. The mids with this amp are exceptional; very natural and lifelike. The treble is well integrated with plenty of detail resolution and basically does nothing wrong that brings attention to the upper registers. The sound as a whole is very coherent and comes together in a very musical manner. As much as I still like the SLAM amps using the 5687 output tubes the soundstage of the Extreme is hard to give up when I switch amps.

More to come as I get more listening time .....

It's great to hear your impressions, Earl -- thanks for sharing.

It might be time for me to give Mikhail another call.

Earl,

Does this compete with the PPX SLAM amp considering its in the same price range?
