* Notice: This thread is mainly for peope who can't afford an amp *

Well, I read quite a number of threads here regarding Senn 580 and how people mention that you have turn volume up to hear them. Well, I tried it on my laptop and this is not entired true. The volume was good at mid-low setting. Now I am testing it on my Rio 500 player and guess what, it was at my listening level at 4-10//25, (the volume is dependent on songs, some are just louder than others), at 10-25//25, songs are LOUD for me. This means for some particular songs at max volume setting I will feel pain in my ears if I listen to them. That's amazing, all the power from a single AA battery, heh.

Volume is only one flip side of the coin. The other side of the coin is quality. You can have a powerful amp that can handle large volume, but it can also be inaccurate and distortive.

Most pcdp and portable devices can probably drive the HD580 to reasonably loud levels. However, such devices usually distort at those listening levels. Many people here buy portable amps to go along with their portable listening devices to bring out the quality of the music, but not necessarily drive the HD580 louder.

Testing loudness with just your ears can be deceptive. Most people can tell if something is relatively loud when the music is played back with distortion. Really good amps that can play back at loud volume with little or almost no distortion can trick people into thinking they are listining at safe levels. This can lead to hearing damage after prolong exposure to high decibels. In other words, a person is less likely to ruin their hearing by accident with poor stereo equipment because the distortion usually induces fatigue or ear aches quicker at lower volumes.
