There I was, all revved up about a pair of dirt cheap closed cans that were AWESOME!!!! I was disappointed when I received the rejection letter from ETRONICS telling me that I wasn't one of the chosen few to receive moldy earphones. *SIGH*
I've been contemplating a pair of closed phones to complement my HD600's for a while and the JVC's seemed like manna from heaven, but it wasn't to be. So I got on the net and sprang for a set of Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro's from BH Photo for $145.
I AM THUNDERSTRUCK! My Senn's have been relegated to the shelf for occasional forays into the realm of classical music and twittery estrogenic foolishness like Edie Brickell, Lisa Loeb an the Indigo Girls when I'm feeling sentimental and de-testosteronified.
THE 770's ROCK BABY! I've had them for 5 days and they just keep getting better! If you listen to rock, pop or hard jazz in any significant proportion you owe it to yourself to give these phones a try. They are a bit shriekish at first, but settle down with continuous play.
They are a very good match with my ASL MG Head (EI EL84 x Telefunken 12ax7). I've been secretly lamenting my recent purchase of the Head because of an unwholesome lust generated in my heart by the beautiful AT W1000's and their inherent incompatibility with Mr. Head, however the sonic qualities of the ugly duckling Beyer's have captured me. I no longer crave the pornalicious glory of the AT's, only the wonderful sounds emanating from my DT770's.
If you are a fathead such as myself , the 770's could be problematic. I removed the padding from the top of the phones and they now fit comfortably. I was rather surprised that the metal strap on scalp sensation didn't cause problems, but it doesn't. I usually wear my HD600's fully extended and the Beyer's are equally as comfortable once the headband padding has been removed.
If you want to rock out with your **** out, these are the phones!
Enjoy!
