Bunnyears, BAwig05, thank you for your recommendations!

Also, I was sampling various CDs there and found the "Famous Marches" to be pretty good as well.

I don't even want to think about how much I've been spending on CDs lately

First of all, I MUST apologize. The Purcell two-fer i referred to is with Andrew Parrott and the Tavener Consort. The one you listed is to my knowledge, still full price.

As for me, I love marches. Fredrick Fennell on Mercury Living Presence recorded some of the greatest march music ever. Herbert von Karajan has a DG Double of marches, Decca has a "Decca Double" of 40 of them, including marches for organ as well. Finally, Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops give you "Stars and Stripes Forever!" on RCA.

That Nanut Dvorak looks very interesting.

Nanut is generally reliable, but that performance is fairly lacklustre (assuming it's the same one that's on Point Classics).

Bartok/Rahbari looks good.

The Mahler,Walton,Stravinsky/Szell SACD appeals, but probably not for beginners.

Karajan Spectacular looks like it would be a lot of fun for a newbie.

"Angels V16:violin Concertos" is part of a series of obscure east European recordings at bargain prices. Good performances of the Bruch & Mendelssohn violin concertos for $1.42 = value!

Holst's Planets + Elgar's String Serenade/Norrington looks good, and The Planets is a great piece for newbies.

P.S. Bear in mind that CD Universe charges shipping per disc, not per item.

Thanks for the heads up on the Nanut.

I have the Szell Mahler, and it's definitely not for the beginner. It's also not a hybrid, so it's only for people with sacd equipment.
