Who's "done"?
Aug 14, 2006 at 6:07 PM Post #31 of 153
99.999999999% done here! Ordered up my last source a few days ago (for the "Bedside Rig"), all that's left now is a solid-state amp. Then all the pieces of my puzzle will have fallen into place. Been a great journey, looking forward to nailing all the essentials of my audio system down and finally selling off the excess. Because I have quite a bit of excess at this point. I wonder how many here would admit to having a bit of excess?

Oh I'm not saying I'll be "done" done of course. There's always experimentation, I still haven't heard the AT woodies on my system, or the high-end Grados (NEED GRADOS!!!!!), or a super-duper-hi-fi tube or solid-state amp, but those will just have to wait. Then there's the always-tempting source upgrade. Anyone know how much I'd need to spend to significantly better my Arcam?

Almost!

I'm pretty happy with my PPX3 Slam > PS-1 for home but I'd like to pick up a pair of HD650's with a Zu for classical listening.

I had my molds shot last week for my ES2's and should have those sometime next week and that will be the end of my portable rig unless I decide to add another amp or a DAC to the mix

I am not done, and 2 more years as a student on a student budget again should be enough to stop upgrades in their tracks, but I can pretty much see where my rig is going. It will end up as a high-end IEM, paired with something small from RS probably, and a DAP for portable. A closed can probably an AT, and then for home listening the k1000. This blew me away enough when I heard it that that can with a nice amp and source could easily be a settler for good.

I'm done!

I haven't bought anything headphone related for more than 5 months now, and I don't have anything else to buy on the horizon at this point. It's just a matter of enjoying what I've got.

I'm not done till the wife says so.... and I don't have a wife.

I have headphones for all occasions.

Portable, don't care if it's raining cans, check.
Portable, when it's sub zero cans, check.
Portable, when I need to look cool, check.
Portable, when I need to look vintage, check.
Portable, when I'd like good sound.

Then there's the portable combinations of rigs where I want super small for running / exercise, bigger for in my pocket, bigger that fits in a bag, and then transportable in size.

Movie cans, check.

Inside, when it's hot cans, check.
Inside, when I don't want to hear anything else, check.
Inside, when I need to do some general audio / video editing, check.
Inside, when I need ultimate resolution, check.

Then there's the combinations of rigs I use on the computers, in my chair, bed, other room, bathroom, etc.

Video games cans, check.

Cans for airplane flight, check.

Since I'm also 95% done nearly modding everything, I'd say I'm close to done. The only little thing is I may need a rig at my parents place in the case I have to do some work there in an emergency.

Kees: Balancing my SA5000's is another thing on my shortlist... but that's just for fun
600smile.gif
I'd like to keep my HF1's stock though.

Jahn: SFT Dynamight; originally built by sft for Kurt ... it's great!

yellafella321: OK, the cable was $30 shipped and who knows when you might need a 1m mini-to-mini. As for the CD player, too early to say until I get the Planet in my possession

.

And the K1000 is a very interesting can if I can get my hands on it I would... but it'd be another fun/novelty can like the HF1's. And if I do I might have to beat Lep's rig ... need my *bo-ng*

As close as I'll come I am finished unless I see something that will fit a particular nitch for me.

Otherwise, its time to focus again on collecting more music and maybe adding to my speaker system next.

I'm done, and definitely on a downward spiral on the whole high end audio thing. Just no longer have the time or patience to sit down with a CD and concentrate on nothing but the CD. My system's been mostly collecting dust. When I do buy a new CD, I just toss it into my computer now to check it out. I'll still keep my gear for now since I know I'd regret dumping it down the line, but it sure isn't getting used.

I'm not done either, although I really enjoy my current gear and am going rather slow. Will be getting a pair of K701 soon (and selling K501 if they're redundant), then thinking about trying an external DAC (DAC-AH?) some time in the future, as well as a better amp. Eventually the turntable setup might need some upgrades too (or I'll just sell it off and get out of analog, which I've been thinking about doing... it's too much hassle, and I rarely listen to it).

So don't. Listen while you're browsing the web, or for a half hour/45 minutes before you fall asleep, to relax. I don't get why a person would absolutely have to devote all their attention to a CD in order to enjoy it. Just move your CDP to a fortuitous location, and toss new discs into it instead of your computer.

I'm a DIY'er so I'm probably never really done :p

I'm pretty happy with my DAC. Still trying to figure out what I want to use for I/V. Have the AD825 in right now which I'd rate pretty high for this task, but I'll be trying the THS4631 and maybe the AD8065 as well. I'm not expecting a lot out of the 8065 for this task but the 4631 might do a good job for a variety reasons...but we'll see I spose. Eventually I'll go discrete, but it's too much trouble at the moment; I simply haven't the time to research and develop a design and then produce a board for it.

Ampwise, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I think I'll probably make use of cetoole's amp w/ discrete buffer if it turns out to work well for a while. Maybe eventually I'll go fully discrete and either do a dynalo or do something of my own.

Portable audio, though, I think I've got nailed down. I've never heard anything I'd even rate in the same league as my PCDP (granted, I've modified the heck out of it at this point), and that's saying a lot since I've listened to and used a lot of portable gear. I still need to do my work on the headphone out section so I don't need to bring an amp with it, which should go fine. Will probably do the necessary modifications to the power section to hit my target of peak > 100mA @ 5V which seems to be perfectly doable due to the design of the unit.

Law School is taking up most of my money, though, so I'm avoiding spending as much as I can.

I'm almost done.
I'm a portable guy. I don't need all that crazy stuff at home as I move around too much.

K81DJ / HP460 > PA2v2 > NW-HD3 / NW-E507 / SV-SD770 / MZ-DH10P
Soon, I'll get that PA2v2 replaced with a hornet but not necessairly now.
And I'll get the UE Triple X once it comes out. That or a Shure E4.

Once I finish buying the sources, I'll move on to photography.
rolleyes.gif

Which will be another $400.

Ideally, I would not be done. But circumstances are changing, so I'm shifting into penny-pincher mode and ignoring all my desires (Millet Hybrid, a new sound card and Sensas 2X-S). Education is a bitch...

Seconded! I can only imagine how many high-end Singlepower amps I could have owned with the money I've been forced to part to pay for uni fees.
