Well they were so close. They were basically great, but they had one flaw which bothered me more than I could tolerate. They have a very slight tip up in the upper midrange which gives a slight but often pleasant accentuation of the grit in the sound of acoustic instruments, however there is a very serious roll off right after that point which is where sounds like singers inhaling and suchlike are found. I listen to a lot of vocal music, and find it very disturbing when the inhalation of breath is muted relative to the following sound - it's as if it has been noise-gated, just jumping out of nowhere.

In the end it's actually a very small colouration on a great pair of headphones, but I couldn't not be irritated by that.

The small things on a headphone sometimes bother me more than the big things... sort of like a splinter in your finger that you just can't get rid of.

I'm not a special fan of AKG or anything, it's just they make the best headphone I've ever heard

I would like absolute power of some kind. I'd prefer dictator.

Since I consider the K701 to be very close to perfect and it makes all my other headphones sound like low-end crap to my ears, I guess I would be an AKG fan (even though the k81dj is one of those "other headphones").

I have no use for any other headphone (for non-portable listening) and will not buy any more dynamic headphones unless something like an improved K701 comes out at less than $400. I will eventually try out electrostatic, probably, but that will not happen anytime soon.
