I heard it stated somewhere that they didn't change the decoder in winamp 3 but I swear the thing sounds awesome. I had been playing with it, QCD, Coolplayer and Sonique up until the final V3 release. Winamp 2 and 3 had been a distant last in the sound quality arena. When I D/L the final V3 and tried it I was blown away by the difference. Maybe I'm nuts, I dunno.

By the way here is a possibly the best skin I have ever seen. Excellent color shemes and winshade mode. Link

Coolplayer uses the MAD decoder which I had been using most of the time up until the final release of Winamp 3. Somehow Winamp just seems to sound better now, plus it seems fairly stable now. The only problem I've had is I lose the display on occasion if I change certain skin modes when the player is on my secondary monitor. That's only happened a couple of times though.

Contrary to a lot of people here, I think V3 is great... I think I started using Winamp at V1.79... when it whooped arse compared to WMP, then WMP8 came out and floored Winamp, but V3 definetly does seem to sound superior to WMP... WTG Nullsoft!!

I change my mind...

Both V2.81 & V3.0 eat CPU cycles like there is no tomorrow...

both Winamps, even when idling consume about 60% of my CPU, whereas WMP8 only uses about 10%...

Oh well, it was good whilst it lasted

If Winamp 2.x uses more than 1-3% cpu on that computer, your problem lies elsewhere. Trust me.
