Eastsound CD-E5 Signature Edition - Pictures now, Impressions soon [56k death]
Apr 15, 2006 at 5:26 PM Post #31 of 79
The E5 Signature is improved with months of tweaking and tuning of the E5.

No design changes.

The sound is more refined in subtle ways with no dramatic differences - just somehow seems more transparent and more correct in its sound.

I think it is worth the $858 compared to the E5s price of $748.

However, I also think that those with the E5 are not missing out on much - they still have a great sound with high resolution of the signal.

Yeah, Snowy got back to me recently and it seems the caps haven't changed. They sure are different than the caps that were in my old Eastsound, so I must assume that there have been revisions to the E5 in general since I purchased my original unit.

From what Snowy has told me the differences are:

New look
Better wiring/circuit board traces
Better component matching

Art: What interconnects did you settle on - at this time at least?

Not really using any interconnects right now, just a hand made digital coax cable between the E5 and my Lavry Black DA10.

Once I get my balanced amp built I will use the Analog Research Silver Raincoat Reference XLR IC's that Snowy sent me at first and will probably experiment with others in the future.

You?

Hmmm, so reduced tolerances in component matching and more solid traces aside, you really are paying $110 extra for the "all-the-cool-kids-are wearing-it" black finish?

Meh, I'll probably choose the SE model anyway, but anxiously awaiting your listening impressions.

Just pulled the trigger on the SE. Can't wait to get my hands on it. Once the PPX Slam ships, the fun will really begin.

Philodox, what do you think of the Gold raincoat interconnects the player ships with. Can't decide if I should keep them or go with the Grover UR7. Most likely I'll end up with the Grovers

I had UR6. and the Gold raincoat interconnects on my E5, and there is no comparison. The Gold raincoats obsured detail and had reduced soundstage, the Grovers just trounced them.

Pretty much, though I do think that this player is a step ahead of my old E5. I think they have made minor improvements in all the revisions and they have added up.

I still haven't seen any internal shots of a more recent E5 European to see if it is, indeed, identical to the E5 Signature. Quote:

They were ok... good tonality, but as DigiPete points out, they had a strange soundstage and were a little lacking in detail. Better than the silver raincoats though, I don't like how they sound. I think that my next pair of IC's is going to be hand made using Kevin Gilmore's 'ProSink' idea.

Thanks DigiPete and Philodox.

As far as the differences I found this website http://www.xs4all.nl/~viver/chinese%...ound%20e5.html

Says pretty much everything mentioned already. No sure how much this statement makes a difference "With improved internal wiring the dynamic range has been improved from 90db to 93db"

Art: Can't figure out why the Sig. weighs more but it does (not as much a difference as the link above says though).

The frame seems to be exactly the same. The transport is exactly the same. Some parts must be heavier but I can't figure out which.

Oh man, and I was pretty sure about getting the Apollo, now this comes in! Are there any differences in the sound yet over the E5 EU? Can this player come in 240V for us Brits?
biggrin.gif

Are there any import charges? And how does it do with rock?

Cheers, I'm looking forward to reading about this, she's still built like a tank!

The E5, regular or SE, comes in Euro voltage as well as 110 V for N. America.

The SE version is slightly better - slightly more refined sound than the regular E5. For some the difference will not be worth the price difference, for others it will be worth it - both are very accurate and highly resolving CD sources. I am quite happy with either, or both as the case actually is.

Decided to join the E5 SE club. Haven't really been able to break it in since I sold my Hornet and I'm awaiting my PPX slam. For the couple of hours I did get to try it out with the hornet I can honestly say that I am very happy with my purchase. It definately is built like a tank. Thanks to all those that helped me out on making a decision.
