I saw this film on Sunday night and its a very well done anime movie (in the style of alice in wonderland but good and no singing). This film is the number 1 grossing film in Japan ever. I figured that many japenese couldn't be wrong so I checked it out and really enjoyed the visuals and characters in the movie.

I'm definitely seeing this whenever I get a chance. I'm assuming it was dubbed, right? How did you like the English voices?

The dub for Spirited Away is supposed to be quite good.

I picked up the Region 3 DVD SE of the film a while ago and I've loved it.

Highly recommended, especially to fans of Miyazaki's other efforts.

BTW -
On a per theater basis (it's a limited run), Spirited Away did great last weekend. Pulling in about $17,000 per screen compared to the number one film last week which did about $7,000 per screen.

That's a great start and a good message to send to Disney (who own the distribution rights to Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli in the USA).

I need to get to it in the theater.

But from what I've heard, don't fear the English Dub on this one. It's supposed to be well done and suit the film quite well. I hope the Region 1 DVD will look and sound as good as the Region 3 disc I have.

OTOH, I did get to see Princess Mononoke in its limited run in the theaters a few years ago.

I am waiting for this film to come to Dallas on October 4 and have somehow managed to avoid the foreign releases of it so far. It has been my most anticipated film for three years.

Miyazaki is Japan's best known film-maker. For those who aren't so ethnocentric to believe "cartoons" are only for children, you may also want to check out the previous Japan box office record holder, Miyazaki's "Princess Mononoke" which is out on DVD and looks incredible.

Miyazaki's relationship with Disney involves Disney stepping rather lightly. Miyazaki was concerned about the quality of his products overseas and has demanded that every film be shown in its entirety (uncut). While I haven't yet seen "Spirited Away", I can vouch for "Princess Mononoke" and "Kiki's Delivery Serivce" having two of the best English dubs I have heard.

I understand anime purism, though, believe me, and you'll be happy to find the original Japanese dialog and English subtitles on the Mononoke DVD as well.

"I understand anime purism, though, believe me, and you'll be happy to find the original Japanese dialog and English subtitles on the Mononoke DVD as well."

And it's nuts like me who are to thank for even having the original Japanese dialog on the Mononoke disc.

When the region 1 DVD was announced, Disney stated that there would only be the English dub on the disc.

This created a big uproar amoung foreign film and anime fans. After some petitioning, phone calls, and mucho letter writing, Disney caved. They postponed the DVD for a couple months and put the original track on it.

That'll learn 'em.

Thanks for the info. For me personally, I don't read reviews of music and film I intend to purchase regardless. Just one of those things -- I like my first impressions to be my own.

Some other Miyazaki films you guys should see if you haven't:
Princess Mononoke
Laputa
Totoro

A non-Miyazaki anime fillm you guys should see if you haven't:
Grave of the Fireflies (my personal favorite anime; based on manga by Romiko Takahashi but way more serious than Ranma, et al)
