E-MU 0404 and two amps: is switch box a good idea?

If you read these forums for long enough, you will, eventually, whether you like it or not, buy an E-MU 0404. I have finally given in.

And yes, it's great. Using the analog out at the moment. One little problem. I listen both to a speaker system (via a T-Amp) and headphones, and I don't really want to be switching the audio cable between the T-Amp and headphone amp all the time.

So I guess I have two alternatives - buy a decent switch box (but a good one seems really hard to find - anyone selling their Fidaudio Quintete?), or go the digital out/DAC route for the second amp. However having forked out for a 0404, that sets the benchmark quite high for an external DAC...

So I'm leaning towards a switch box. I'm presuming a good one will not degrade the sound in any noticeable fashion. If you think that's misguided, let me know. And if you think it's a reasonable idea, I'd be grateful for any advice on where to pick up a decent one in the UK at a fair price (i.e. of Quintete standard).

Since you are on a tight budget, I'd really think about commissioning a DIY'er to build you one. You'll be able to specify parts, what case you want, RCA jacks, etc... and will probably be cheaper than any commercial solution.

Another way to use both amps is to have a custom EMU cable built that has dual outputs. Probably RCA and Mini, since you're using the T-Amp.

Well yeah, but the T-Amp and PA2V2 don't really have loop out...

Thanks all for your responses.

Sounds good. I'm new to the DIY side of things. Do I just post my desired spec in the DIY forum and wait for a DIYer to respond? Or is there a list I have not yet found of DIYers who build switches?

This is something I might even try myself (I was already thinking about buiding a custom breakout). I have found the very useful guide to building a standard breakout. Is there anything similar for building a breakout with dual analog outputs?

I use a simple switchbox that Zemo made for me a while ago.. one RCA input, one RCA output, and one 1/8" stereo output. He charged me around $50, IIRC.

Works perfectly.

You could get any configuration of inputs and outputs that you want. Just ask.
