This is good. If I find an ECR-800 before I get my electrostatic amp built, I'll get the Sony electret chasis connector added to it.

Well I don't mean to brag but...

Congratuwaggers, old thing! You also must've been keeping the old eyeflaps posted on this auction here in the Stats-- I mean, States:

[The SR-5 Gold Anniversary Edition went for $224.50 shipped (!) Here's some edited text from that auction:]

On the occasion of 25 year of STAX the diaphragm thickness was reduced from 5 to 2 micrometers. ...

Technical data for SR5 gold:
Reciprocally open electrostatic system
Frequency range 30 Hz - 25000 kHz
Sensitivity 96dB /100V (max.110dB)
Cable Capacity 120pF inclusive
Cable oxygen-free copper
Weight 310g
Color black/gold

Technical data for SRD-6:
Frequency range 10 Hz - 30 kHz +/-2dB
Distortion 0.02%/1kHz /1W
Maximum input 5W rms @ 1kHz, 30W Peak
Input impedance 8 ohms
Bias 230VDC
Dimensions 90x66x194 mm
Weight 1.2 kg

Frankly, even though I can't tell an exchange rate from a badger hole, I think you got the better deal. Well done, lad.

Since we let you brag unmolested, you simply must tell us in detail how they sound. We'll badger you until you do.

Yeah, the other SR-5 gold would be more expensive after I account for shipping fees >.> The exchange rate is around 1.25 euros = 1 USD, last time I checked anyway. (that's paypal's rate, including the fees I suppose)

Btw, there was another SR-5 gold that went for a measly 88 euros :0 Dammit, couldn't get anyone to bid on it for me in time.

I hope you enjoy them.

Don't think I'll be able to enjoy them that much though... I'll have to run them out my active speakers' subwoofer for a while, until I have enough money for a "proper" power amplifier.

Why not get a cheap Stax amp off ebay or whatever?

I got my Stax 2020 for £200 off ebay. I think that anyone would struggle to find better value for money than that.

You mean the energizers? I think mine are stuck at Malaysian Customs right now -_- prolly because they can't find a way to tax it.

The SRM-1 MK2 isn't cheap either.

Oh, so you've already bought one. I hope customs is kind on you.

Here's the Sony ECR-500 Service Manual. I have really mediocre photography skills btw. It gives some interesting exploded views of the headphones as well as the energizer. The diaphragm is described as a "uni-electret, scalene pentagon diaphragm". I've opened up the earcups on my ECR-500's before and noticed that there are two diaphragms per earcup, with one diaphragm facing towards the ear on the trasducer capsule and one diaphragm facing away on the opposite side of the capsule. Maybe the one on the backside is passive, but I can't really tell without disassembling the headphones completely.

56K warning, the images are around 200K each.

Ditto! It was like falling into the Time Tunnel for me.

There's only one active diaphragm. You may be seeing the humidity/dust shields. After all, when your diaphragm is charged 24/7/365, dust and humidity are your worst enemies.
