MY sig can't keep up with the changes I'm making these days. Hopefully I can settle down to a few choices soon.

In addition to the Beyer HD250-80 which arrived a few days ago - but I haven't even got round to opening the box yet - I have a Technics RP-FDA100. Yes, those anime-look DVD-phones.

Yesterday, I called the shop to say that I was thinking about selling the Audio-Technica ATH-A9X and whether they would be able to sort out warranty for the new owner.

They then did something surprising - they offered to buy the A9X from me for £70 less than the price they sold it to me.

When I said that the other guy had offered me £30 more, they stomped on me with the offer of offers - £50 credit at the shop and a Technics RP-FDA100 (I've asked to try them on several times

)!

A picosecond later, I said "OK! YES!", put down the phone, rang the would-be buyer and blew him off. I felt bad for about one second, and then later felt bad about not feeling bad long enough.

So - I arranged the exchange today, my GF made the drop, and I now have it. I don't have time to listen to the phones now, but they do sure look pretty...

Just had to get that off my chest to you guys.

I saw that Magicthyse had a new headphone and winced before clicking on the thread title to see what they were. "Beyer DT250-80! Wow, what a nice surprise!" and then I went on to see they'd not been opened and that he was going to talk about some other crap and...

well... I sorta just glazed over. Wah wah-wah wah wah.

At least now I know how you guys feel reading my reviews.

My one thought...

You've gotta get your hands on a pair of MDR-V6 to complete your collection

Shame you can't buy them from any UK dealers... ho-hum

Correction, the Beyer is now out of the box...

And, well, it isn't very inspiring visually. This may be a good thing, but I can't help feeling that Beyer could have made a bit more of an effort. Anyway, I have two headphones burning in in one go - I think this is a first for Magicthyse.

I think I'm generally on my way to stabilising my phone collection.

Part of the reason for the surfeit of cheaper phones (I have not one but 2 KSC-50's) is that I have rather a lot of 'puters at home - 4 of which happen to be in the same room. They all need phones. Currently I've got the KSC-35, 2 x 50's and a HD497 in there but soon I'll be going all KSC-50 for the room. I'll keep the 35 as a memento though

Why the 50? It's easy to remove and put on.

The SR60 is frequently used with the laptop as well as with the second setup - DVD's sound pretty good on it.

I'm not sure where the RP-FDA100's fit in yet, but possibly they could replace the SR60 if they're up to scratch.

The 212 was fun for a while - but it's a bit too much. So that'll be going to a friend.

The HD280 has come in very handy on a number of occasions when I'm editing stuff I upload from Minidisc. These are a keeper - not for listening, but for, well, monitoring... duh. And I've modded it without compromising the integrity of the phone - so I can have these on for an hour (still, unfortunately no longer) or so and not feel like I've been hit on the head with a hammer.

Finally, I'll admit that a lot of my home listening is done on my speakers. But I get more intimacy with the music on phones - so they are used quite frequently as well. The SR225's are good enough for me at the moment - I haven't felt the urge to go any higher yet. Besides, I'd be afraid having to buy a higher-end source to use with better phones...

And Duncan, there is always the 7506...

I can't wait to read your opinion of the DT250-80. They sounded pretty good straight out of the box imho, don't need that much burn-in. Should be spectacular, pay special attention to the midrange detail. I use my DT250-80 through a 4.5v airhead. Sources are my Sony D-EJ621 PDCP (which has a line out!) and el-cheapo sound card. The PDCP has a liquid sound to it while the sound card is cold with rolled off upper treble.

Congrats on your purchase, remember that I am the evil one who convinced you to buy these things

remember. . . 86 dB with no distortion through my PDCP amp.

Lemme see how loud the airhead goes with no audible distortion. . .

106 dB peaks C-weighted

There's no way in hell I would listen to them at anything above 80dB peaks though. . .

gl with your constant headphone rampage...

WORKING AT WINNERS CANADA AS A SALES ASSOCIATE (which includes toilet cleaning duties) IS NOT WORTH $8 CANADIAN AN HOUR!!!

that aside....i keep feeling the urge for some sony v6's....i would totally go for beyer 250's as well, but for now price is definitely important...

a1leyez0nm3 : are you willing to give up your sony v6's? you do have senn 280s, why not share the v6 love?
biggrin.gif

waitaminute: just read your profile and you dont have v6's listed anymore....did you ever have them at all, or was it a figment of my imagination?

Quite simple. I can't get on with things you stick in your ear. It's not just the comfort, it's the fact that it takes quite a while to reseat them after taking them out. I don't know why I would use an Ety inside, and outside, I do frequently take my V700 off. Maybe I'll get one for long journeys by plane but I don't do that too often. Who knows, maybe I will get one, but I have a nasty feeling it'll sit unused.

I work in IT. I run a company and I also provide specialized services myself.

Etymotics, after the initial period of getting used to them are as simple to insert / remove as any standard pair of earphones...

The only issue I personally see with ETYs in the UK is availability

I still wonder, why people keep recommending the DT250/80 so often. The DT250/250 sounds a lot better to my ears, as the DT250/80 seems to have recessed highs... And the efficiency with portables is only very slightly better with the DT250/80, either... <sigh>

Greetings from Munich!

Haven't tried to run the DT250-80 off a portable yet - I have a problem with them discovered this morning, arrgh* - but this is what I was afraid of. Hopefully you're wrong, Lini...

* Buzzy left driver. These'll be going back for replacement.

The RP-FDA100's are sounding pretty damned fine with classical string-based stuff. I might actually prefer these to the SR225 when listening to this sort of thing - a very nice, rounded sound so far, while still able to convey highs accurately. Unfortunately, because the drivers are some way away from your ears, there's no bass to speak of - there's considerably less bass than even the SR60, although rather like the HD280, you know it's there. I'm even less sure about where these fit in my phone collection now... But I can't get over how freaking cool these phones look.
