Hi guys,

Im thinking of buying a sub to complement my system.

What would you think would be a good sub under $500.

I feel guilty about matching a cheap sub with my system

But low on cash.

Thanks.

the PSB Subsonic comes to mind, I believe it's right around 500 bucks. NHT as well? You might try looking in some home theatre magazines for reviews, I think they'll cover more subs in that price range than the audio 'zines. I like Stereophiles Guide to Home Theater... I believe they're on-line as well.

From what I have read the Adire Rava is an excellent sub. Another excellent sub in your price range that I happen to own and love is the HSU VTF 2.

Try the Italian BMT or cold cut trio at SUBWAY. Only about $4.00, cheap.

Yamaha is out of the question. M&K is fabulous, but not at this price range.
Subwoofers to consider taking home at this price range should be:
Paradigm PW-2200
Velodyne VLF-1012
B&W ASW 1000
If this was 8 years ago Klipsch would of definitely been on this list.

Actually the yamaha yst-sw800 is pretty good, but too costly.
The smaller yamaha yst-sw320 is just in my price range.
The m&k is just abit better than the yamaha for music, but not enuff slam for ht.

I havent heard the velodyne yet but its on sale in oz.
B&W on the other hand are pretty rare here.

I might just put in abit more and get the m&k

Ive heard it and its soooo sweet, gets it just right.

My speakers are twin closed floor standers.
Legend acoustics Kama2. Really nice speakers.

Sounds like you're looking for more bass and not low bass for the HT.

Yamaha and B&K are no match compared to Hsu, if you listen to pipe organ etc. Velodyne is a closer match.

You should audition the Velodyne.

The only sub I've heard in this price range is the super-cheap Sony SA-WM40. It's suprisingly good! You need to perform a minor tweak of opening it up and adding some poly-fil (the cabinet is totally empty otherwise), but after you do that it sounds very good. Only costs $160 too.

Kewl I'll take a look into the Velodynes as well.

What do guys think of the VAF range of subs?
I totally forgot about them while considering subs.
They have a pretty good rep for their speakers.

www.vaf.com.au

I havent heard them before but their dcx speakers are highly regarded.

How comes that nobody mentioned REL so far???

The REL Q100E sub belongs to this price range (a second-hand one, actually, since it's not produced anymore, what a pity!) and it's exceptional value for money!

Ctn,

Any chance you could build it yourself? If so, adire sells drivers and has a lot of info on their website about different box sizes/types/etc, so you could build just the type of sub you want (be it suited more toward ht or music, or a mix of both). I've got a pair of tempests that I'm very happy with.
