Where is a newbie to start?

WIth 128's - well the KSC-35's are I suspect frowning constantly and saying "This material is beneath me!"

With 192K material, better headphones would also be something of a waste.

What better headphones would primarily provide with inferior material is a change in the nuance of the sound. Don't expect increased accuracy - in fact, accurate headphones might even spoil the enjoyment of the music, since you will start to be able to hear the artifacts in some areas of the music.

320K MP3's, yes, would make a difference. About 80-90% of my music is from my CD's so I rip at 320K and use MP3 as a way of compressing 5 CD's into one.

I completely agree with that assessment. For really critical listening, don't use MP3's at all. However, for general listening, 320k should be ok, depending on music.

Okay first i'll give out my usual "my bad" statement, but then i'd like to add, if you're gunna "borrow" copywritten music... for a while... until you get cash flow... DO IT RIGHT for the love of mercy...

and i always chastized my friend for stealing... crazy mf... and would never do it myself... but its nice to have friends with big collections anyhow.

oh, and a general off topic question bringing my newbie status back into light: how do you get the name of the poster in the quote? i'm obviously doing it wrong...

TaffyGuy will never learn to keep his mouth shut.

I have no problem ripping off the music industry, the same folks who have been ripping off the buying public and artists for decades.

Just how many times am I expected to buy the White Album?

And remember when CD's first came out, list price of $14.95, on sale everywhere for $12.95, and the record companies said those high prices would soon come down to match those of vinyl?

What's the current list now, $18.95?

Sorry, a bit off topic I know...

I don't disagree. I just wouldn't necessarily say so in public.

What do yall think of this setup? If I get this, am I really going to need to spend an insane amount of money on cables to get the most from it? Oh yeah, I am going to be using this mostly at my computer, listening to mp3's (I can't afford CD's!). Is it even worth spending this much on a headphone setup if it is going to be used almost exclusively with mp3's?

Thanks a lot.

I've got the X-Cans V2, and I have a lot of good things to say about it. One nice thing is that you have something of an upgrade path with tube rolling and adding an upgraded power supply.

I've never heard the HD600

, but it's supposed to be wonderful. If you're tight for money, maybe the HD580's?

As for listening to MP3's, I'm not sure how much improvement you're going to get with a decent headphone & amp. The biggest difference that you will receive (IMHO) from better cans and amp is a better feel for the nuances of the music. MP3's basically lack a lot of what you would gain. I know...I'm an MP3 bigot for critical listening (although I do listen to them when I work out, and I'm not so much interested in top-quality sound as just having something besides my own pain to concentrate on
