I'm about to upgrade my headphones and soundcard to an x-fi elite pro with a senn hd-650, but because of it's high impedance (300 ohms), would I need a seperate amp when I connect it to the best x-fi edition, the elite pro.. ?

They would sound ok out of your X-Fi, but for best sound get an amp

Are you locked in with the purchase of the X-Fi? I'm not sure how good for music it is (never heard it), but the EMU-0404 is a huge favorite around here. Just something to keep in mind

You will need an amp for the Emu though, since it outputs L/R Mono.

The X-Fi Pro has basically all the same components and such as the 1212m, so it should be quite good for music--better than the 0404 (assuming you enjoy the sound signature).
