Looks like the chip itself does not contain any converters (one part they never really got right) but relies on external ones instead. Only S/PDIF receivers and transmitters are integrated, and it looks like the DSP will have some computing power, as opposed to the Envy24HT - realtime AC-3 encoding is supported. We'll see how it fares in terms of bit-perfect audio transfer and jitter, but so far it looks fairly promising.

Well, uhm, hmmm, you know, as that realtime AC-3 encoding is supported in software via Dolby Digital Live, that dsp computing power is provided by nothing other than your cpu...

it mentions Karaoke features and so on, which makes my suspicious...
Does anybody know what happens in the DSP mode? Will that reconfgure the chip or is that gimmics for richer interface only?

Karaoke features are realizable controller features (I think, these features have not much to do with pro or consumer status) that you can realize if you want.
The PCI card mentioned on 1st post, just uses this controller, and who knows (yet) all the features which have been realized on this card we are talking here.
