So I just received my Creative Audigy 2 zs notebook. The output for the front speakers sounds fine through both my headphones and speakers. However, the optical/headphone out sounds atrocious. It has an echoing and bloated midbass. Not even a slight effect, its mucho prominent. Any idea why this could be?

Have you turned EAX effects 'OFF'?

If you're using ASIO drivers then there is 3rd party drivers available @ USB-Audio.

EAX - http://www.soundblaster.com/eax/abouteax/

EAX effects can be set on EAX control panel, which can be opened using
--> Start/Programs/Creative/SoundBlaster Audigy/EAX Console -menu choice
--> on Surround Mixer pressing 'icon' beside Default -button
--> "C:\Program Files\Creative\SBAudigy2\CtPanel.exe"

Forget the USB-AUDIOs USB-ASIO driver. Your card seem to be PCMCIA type not USB I supposed --> I mixed it to Audigy 2 NX, which is USB system and suppored by the driver mentioned.

First off, the audigy 2 zs drivers are asio 2.0 drivers, obviously modified for this hardware.

Secondly, the eax are by default turned unless you turn them on.

Thirdly check to see if your cmss 3d is on, I personally don't like it.

This is most important, use 2.1 speaker setting even when using your headphones through the headphone jack, you will hear a vast difference in sound.

I've used this soundcard for about 8 months now and love it, best solution I've found for a laptop, I've used usb soundcards and honestly they are so cumbersome, more wires and for portability a pain in the ass.
