They don't "need" it but in my opinion they sound a lot better with amplification.

I had the HD595 for a few months and used it without amplification straight out of my iPod Nano and receiver. It sounded great, but then I got the Little Dot Micro+ and it made the sound even better. With the Little Dot Micro+, there's increased clarity and better treble.

So, I would say there's no immediate need to get an amp, but I suggest you should get one to get the full potential out of the HD595.

It depends on what you plug them into. I think any full size headphone needs amplification when plugged into a portable music player.

Will an amp give them more impact, especially in mid bass? That's what I'm really looking for with them and hopefully they'll come through. I'm just impatient to know although my go-vibe shall be here soon

I've had the HD595s for less than 3 weeks at this point and I already bought a total bithead, sold most of my headphones and coincidentally lost my marshmallows. Go figure.

I felt that my ipod shuffle really drove them much better than my audigy2 and unamped av-710, the shuffle showed how much depth the cans had but even though the sound was good I always had a furrowed brow when listening to this combo like something was being held back. When I got the total bithead, i knew these headphones needed it to do them justice. The shuffle was enjoyable but the quality was nowhere near what HD595s can do.

WOW... I am blown away.... I just got my new BES Icarus today with the PCM-1798 DAC daughterboard (after reading head-fi observations I gotta say that I was getting kind of disappointed with my 595s lately. Just really sounding distant and kind of muddled. The bass was getting thicker and not much 'punch' but had plenty of extension. The highs were there, but you had to listen carefully for them. Generally, they were getting kind of boring

Incedently, I also ordered a new pair od Alessandro ms-pros. but they are back ordered for 1-2 weeks

Anyways.. back to the 595s... WOW... this amp brought these to life! Way more definition, wider soundstage, closer... much closer to the performance. I hear a lot of details that I havent heard from these ever before. ( I bought these about 2-3 months ago) Much more enjoyable to listen to! Right now listening to FLAC version of Meddle

Hey... where is that new 595 smilie, anyway?

I was really considering selling these 595s after my pros get here, but now I think I'll keep them

Hi, i wonder if a soundcard as M-audio Audiophile Firewire will get the most out of the 595's? Or should i be getting only the audiophile 2496 and save an extra buck for an amp?
Also....what do you think? In classical music could it be much overall difference between 595's and a pair of... AKG 701? Im almost afraid to ask....

The HD595 will scale up with source and amp.....so an external DAC will help. Generally it's a good rule of thumb to spend the same amount of money on source as amp. And with the 595, you can keep going

I haven't listened to the k701 yet....not a AKG fan. But the 595 is actually pretty good for classical IMO. It has excellent range for symphonies. It has a smaller soundstage, so it sounds like you're conductor instead of audience member (which really got me in the music!). I would think the main improvement the k701 may have is soundstage.

guys...just thought id share sumthing... a cheap way of improving/upgrading ur HD595s

i made 2 impedance adapters... 220 ohm and 100 ohm. and got my colleague to test it out on his rig which would be :
PC -> Philips PSC805 USB Soundcard -> Cardas HPI mini-mini -> GoVibe 5 (with Elpac 24V PSU) -> HD595

specs of the adapters
220ohm - taiwan made stereo mini/ canare L-4E6S/ 220ohm resistors/ some japan made mini female jack.

100ohm - neurtik/ REAN plugs (the low end ones)/ canare L-4E6S/ 100ohm resistors/ some japan made mini female jack.

so i handed it over to him and when he tested the 220ohms (total 270ohms) he was so happy that his cans finally had bass LOL. and couldnt stop saying "my cans finally have boom boom!!". even i was shocked (ive always disliked the 595 for the lack of bass). but he did say the mids and highs were a little recessed now. most likely caused by the lack of volume i guess.

i just gave him another adapter for 100ohms (total 150ohms) a few hours ago to test and he said it sounds even better as its more balanced than the 220ohms. the word "wow" actually came out of his mouth. and he still raving about how good his cans sounds

the adapters on my 250ohm DT990 made almost no difference honestly. only prominent difference would be the volume level. ive yet to try the adapters on my Philips HP250 (32ohms i think) to test it out.

as for pix... i aint gonna post them up as theyre too ugly

they just dont do my previous DIY cable works any justice hehehe.
