post your grado mods....

I dont see the point in recabling any sr225 or higher model. the stock cable is thick enough to strangle a horse. as far as cable work, i intend to chop the last 2 feet off my sr80 cable and terminate, then use cutoff part as an extender. Might even use a few inches of the cable for an interconnect for my amp.

while i'm at it i should remove the liberal amounts of hot glue holding my cans together and do the hole punch mod.

I think everyone can agree that even though the cable on the Grados is audibly satisfactory; the twisting of the cable and clunky y-splitter isn't. Making the cables removable and removing the y-splitter is a nice easy job that will make listening a lot less of a hassle (especially on the higher end models that have a ridiculously chunky cable).

Aye - recabling on the higher ones is mostly a matter of usability and added function (if you want removable, or single entry, or balanced).

For instance, I'm going to be setting up my 225i's for single sided entry (with a starquad mogami), with an option to swap out the TRS later for a balanced 4 pin xlr.

I s'pose what he's trying to say is that there is no general consensus on cables on these boards. There's are a couple of very long threads on the cable debate.

Thank you for the clarification. Anyway @Grado77, if you really want to get your headphones recabled many people have gone to Moon Audio for their Grado cables. Seeing as it is you didn't specify a budget, that's the most commonly seen brand around here, most other people on this particular thread (myself not excepted) DIY recables.

Anyone knows if Q-Audio does recabling on Grados?

I have a single entry + balanced mod for my 225's in the works. Should be wrapped up on the next day or two.

you can try - sound signature is seriously affected by the driver housing and pad size/type configuration though - so I don't know that it would end up sounding anything like a grado.

i need to know whether the drivers will sit perfectly or not, or will i ended up doing major modification in order to fit the drivers

as for the sound signature, i can play with damping material and various recabling later on to obtain the grado sound back.. no worry

failed all of the above, i can just put the driver back to the original housing and sell them

Pretty simple. Single sided, balanced entry mod using Mogami 2893 (two conductors to the right side also mogami innards, shrink tubed along the grado metal band) and Neutrik 4 pin xlr connector. Glad to not have to deal with the y-connect anymore.

I cheated a little - rather than desoldering down to the pads - I left a little of the grado original cable, and just did wire to wire soldering. some tiny shrink tube to insulate the joins from each other, and it's right as rain. :)

Sounds great. (Well it always sounded great, but now at least it's more functional, and I can go balanced when I upgrade my amp).
