Is a custom breakout cable for the EMU 0404 worth the money?

I have a Gilmore Lite on the way right now. I was planning on getting some RCA cables here in town, and some 1/4 to RCA adapters. I could also get a custom cable from headphile or another place that will just be RCA directly from the EMU to the Gilmore.

Is there a big difference in sound quality? Anyone done a lot of testing?

Thanks

I ended up ordering a cable from a headfi member here, built for $18 including shipping. Should be here in a few days, uses high quality copper cables and connectors, looks very similar to the headphile ones.

I can let you know the quality when it gets here.

That'll be really helpful, thank you. I was really considering buying the breakout from Headphile.com. Fid-audio would be an option but I'm in the US and I don't want to wait forever. $70 for the Headphile's is almost as much as i paid for my E-MU 0404 though and with the Gilmore Lite on my wishlist this is becoming a really expensive lifestyle.

That was my thinking exactly. If I was going to spend $70 on the cable it seems I would be better served taking out the 0404 and trying to return it and then getting the 1212m, rather then paying for a cable 70% of the price of the card itself

Also I don't know if you are running the EMU ampless and have no idea what your cans are but I can't recommend the Gilmore Lite enough. I didn't understand the meaning of the term "muddy" till out of curiosity I unplugged the gilmore from the emu, hooked up a 1/8th adapter and ran my 595s directly from the EMU.

Guitars sounded very far away and lacked detail, the bass just covered everything......like mud would :p Plug the gilmore back in, the bass is punchier and more refined, not as dense, and the guitars jump out at you and are full of detail.

To test the new cable I am going to play 2 or 3 songs with the stock, then switch to the new cable and listen for differences, then switch back again. Same way I tested for my first amp. I am going to start a thread and have pics

I'm actually not running my E-MU 0404 at all as I'm waiting for the Gilmore to ship and then there's this breakout cable business. Who made your cable for you?

Exactly how many headphones sound without proper amplification. Most people who say "sound fine without an amp" simply have had nothing good to compare too.

I was refering to synergy between the Gilmore Lite and whatever headphones he has.

That sentence is worded in an odd way. Do you mean is the cable I bought as good as the $70 headphile one? Well I know the components are high quality shielded cables that have favorable reviews on the site, as are the connectors. Gold plated 9-pin looks pretty slick, it looks almost exactly like the headphile, but it uses copper instead of silver, more like the fid audio.

I can tell you the audio differences after it arrives, if it sounds no different than the stock cable I will let you guys know.

The bass is better, the highs are more extended and everything is more smooth. That is my very quick analysis of the differences. It doesn't change the basic 0404 sound dramatically.
