a couple of minidisc questions

The NZ707 has a 7 step bass/treble EQ. It was the major reason why I chose it over the even cheaper NZ505 which also had ATRAC Type R but no EQ, just a 2 step Mega Bass, and Type R was essentially the only thing I wanted a new recorder for. I figured I might do occasional music playback on the 707, so I wanted the EQ, and shelled out a bit more for that.

The Line Out is only useful for car playback, speaker playback, or to output to a headphone amp. Yes EQ is eliminated when the Line Out is on, otherwise the Line Out would be rather pointless. You can't adjust the volume either when the N1 is in Line Out mode. A Line Out is supposed to provide a straight and clean signal to be amplified or screwed around with externally. You wouldn't want to be able to EQ the signal or change its volume, otherwise it's not a true Line Out. Panasonic PCDPs let you use the bass boost through its Line Outs, which is rather dumb, and some MP3/CD players let you adjust the volume of the Line Out, which is again rather dumb.

I didn't think the N707 had those settings. Nice touch.

My biggest concern with the N505 and N707 (and the last generation R500 and R700) is that these units are all made in Malaysia, and I've been reading a *lot* of complaints about quality concerns. Other than that, these new MD recorders are attractive and are reasonably-priced, and, hopefully, MiniDisc will become the big hit Sony was hoping for in North America.

Being the happy owner of the R909, R70, and the E707 player, if I ever get into Net MD, I think the N707 would be a good choice, for me. Good luck with your purchase.

Having had an MZ-N1 for about 2 months now, I can say this is quite a nice little player/recorder. I evaluated these things for months prior to buying it. I hope you're as happy with it as I am, but I just can't stop creating new discs. I've used almost every application with it, and hope to add some new hardware (amp and headphones) from HeadRoom. Enjoy.

I got my first minidisc player/recorder today -- a JVC XM-R70 that I got a really good price on. I haven't done any recording yet, but I've played a few premastered discs I bought and am very pleased so far.

The all-metal, solid construction is great. Much better than the PCDPs I'm used to -- I just want to run up behind someone and brain them with it, it feels so solid. But anyway.

The sound quality also seems very good, at least as far as I can tell with the horrid headphones I'm using now. (Actually, the ones it came with are the best I've ever seen as included headphones -- they even have a gold-plated plug and pleather pads, haha.) Is there much of a difference between the sound quality of premastered discs and discs I'll record myself? Regardless, I'm sure I'll be happy with it since it sounds significantly better than MP3.

There's no line-out and the internal amp doesn't seem wickedly powerful, but that shouldn't be a problem since I'll be using it with V6s, SR80s, and ****ty little buds I use to workout with.

Woo hoo, I'm psyched to start burning some discs!

Premastered MDs don't sound as good as recorded ones, but it does depend on the source you record from.

There is very little noticable difference though, between a pre-mastered and a good recorded one.

I assume you mean the opposite? Good to hear there's not much difference though. Probably go buy some disks today and start recording. ...
