And the nice thing about them is that they can be spec'd to be both strong and acoustically lossy-- that is, relatively nonresonant.

Shapelock is indeed what's on order. Just easy to shape without tools.

You do! You do!

Are we talking about headphones or bullet proof helmets here?

I live in a city that is very heavily plastics industry with a lot of compounders. A buddy is the sales manager for one compounder and I have friends that work at three others. The really cool stuff is the MIL-SPEC ballistics polymers. I used to have a source for 25 pound bags of off spec material that was given to me as scrap generic fiber-fill Nylon. They were not allowed to sell it to non military applications and they couldn't call it by the trade name if it was off-spec. But it was bullet-proof, as rigid as 6061-T6 when properly injection molded, and had sound deadening properties inherent to the fiber fill in the nylon. I could get it in natural and it takes RIT dye like a sponge with no bleeding when wet or exposed to alcohols.

I was going to use for radio control monster truck parts, but the injection molding dies were $75K domestically sourced. I have new resources for injection molding, so maybe I need to see if they're still running that material.

Don't think I've posted a pic of my Yamaha CR-820 receiver..Picked it up for 80$ locally a couple of months back. It had just come back from some TLC and apart from the slight imperfections on the edges it is in gorgeous condition. Mainly use it for FM radio listening.

Also, this pic shows off the grains on my Afzelia TPs brilliantly.

While the headphone out section is decent, it just doesn't cut it for ortho listening without some EQing.

Just got back from Spain and on our last day, we were walking around in Madrid and found a felt shop. I bought 3 different felts, a thick dense synthetic, a thin, less dense wool, and a very thick, very dense felt (I forgot to ask what it's made of). I don't speak Spanish so I wasn't able to communicate very well with them to let them know what I was going to use it for. If anyone is going to Madrid, it's worth a visit, especially if you speak Spanish.

nice!!
A friend of mine just got back from Spain too... From the pics it look slike a lovely place to visit. can't wait to plan a Europe trip.

Oh, any chance of tossing in a few bits of those felts when the package with the TP comes knocking ?

Don says they're the best damped TP's he's yet heard, and he really likes the sound. Great job Smeggy!

Actually they made their way to Portland more for a cable change. I need a 4 pin XLR termination. As soon as Nate sends the cable to Don that will get taken care of. Had I planned ahead, the trip from Seattle to Portland would have made much more sense, instead of Seattle-Texas-Portland. Oh well.

They're Macassar Ebony and IMHO absolutely stunning! Maybe Don can be talked into taking and posting a few pics?

So it turns out the Yamaha YHD-2 has two layers of some fairly thin bareuly useful tissue felt behind the driver.

Comparitively the Yamaha YHD-1 had an even more useless layer of thin reticulated foam behind the driver and then one layer of that tissue. (thats the foam that turns into sticky goop).

Why these completely pointless differences exist im not sure... :S

Really? It's just a simple resistor network off the output transistors. Mine is great with out EQ on orthos, or I tune the orthos until it sounds great without EQ...

I only need EQ for the SR-Lambdas through the SRD6, +2 on the bass to make up for the loss through the SRD6.

The ballistic Nylon I had access too wasn't used for bullet-proof helmets. It's too heavy for that application. A bullet-proof helmet is a composite layup. I have plans to do a few different composite layups for headphone cup trials, but I'm buried in other design projects right now and have way too much on my plate as it is.

Seems like there are people making micarta with resin and blue denim. Looks very cool, but I think I'll stick with learning to turn wood first...!

Hi, Team Ortho!

I am tempted to take the plunge and start with some Fostex T50RP from B&H since they advertise them as the "improved" version (guessing that's with the new pads).

Anyway, I've read through a good bit of this thread and have seen some comparisons between them stock, modded with basic felt, heavily modded - against some other orthos.... But I've never heard an Ortho before. Can anyone point me to some comparisons with well-known dynamics so I can get an idea if this is a pure project set or something I might like reasonably well out of the box or with minimal modifications? I know there will be lots of caveats because the driver technology is so different.

I'm looking for some comparison between these:

1. Stock
2. Basic mods
3. Supermods (there's a thread for the Thunderpants, but no reviews in it yet.)

I own a pair of Shure SRH-840's, Audiotechnica AD700's, and UE Triple.fi10's. I've spent a couple days with a friend's Sennheiser HD600's as well. But if anyone can compare to something fairly mainstream I can look up comparisons from those to a pair of cans I have experience with.

Just anything to give me an idea of what I'm in for.

I bought about 22 Euros worth with the intent to share so you'll get some.

When I was leaving the store, I noticed some strips of inch thick felt in the window.
