Is the +4dB gain exclusive to the EMU 1212?

I also agree with Glassman that the output of the emu 0404 is hotter than most consumer devices. So I find your situation strange.

What's wrong with being at 70% volume? It's not as if your amp is working harder.

If it's active it could. Passive preamps only attenuate. But active ones could reduce the quality especially cheap ones. You'd then need another interconnect which could further compromise quality.

But he doesn't really need one as he's using not 100% of volume.

Looking at the peak meter, does it go a good amount to the right?

Just making sure you're setup is not reducing volume.

as for the cable, what kind is it?

Yes that's right, all it does is increase weak signals with low gain?

To send Asio straight to the audio out. I was just toying with it, it was off before. Doesn't change volume. =|

And also does an EQ which is only for turntables. TUrntable preamps shouldn't be used as a normal preamp.

You shouldn't really increase the strip levels posisitve because you'll end up clipping.

All looks well. Try another cable if you can. I'm just ruling out the possibilities.
