Hi,

I am thinking of getting new headphones. I currently using the MX 500 with my Nomad 2 but i use them for home use as well. I need a good pair for gamimg, classical and rock. Not really for protable use, I can use my MX 500 for that. Im thinking about the Sony V6 or Grado SR 60, my budget is around $70. Are the SR 80s alot better? I dont have an amp so which one will work best without one?

All three will sound great without an amp.

I recommend the Grado SR-80s - I decided to get the SR-80s over the SR-60s because they have better bass and a bit deeper soundstage. The better bass in particular was worth the extra $25.00 to me - the SR-60s can be a little bass shy.

Both the SR-60s and SR-80s sound way better than the V6s to my ears. However, if you need a headphone that doesn't leak sound and provide some isolation - you should get the V6s because they are sealed cans and the Grados are both open.

I have had the 60s,80s,325s and out of these three cans I liked the 80s the best.

I own SR80's and 2 V-6's (one with the Beyer pads and some internal damping mods). I generally agree with Milestones. I much prefer the SR80's over the SR60's in a/b testing (same source at the same sitting). The soundstage is clearly superior with the SR80's over the V6, although the V6 has better bass extention. I find the stock V6 to be somewhat "clinical", and the SR80 to be more "musical". The 80's leak alot of sound to the outside, while the closed V6 is better for noise isolation.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I ordered the SR 60 from Headroom just to test to see if I like it. When I bought my Sennheiser MX 500 I really couldn't tell alot of difference when I compared it to my Aiwa stock so I don't really want to spend so much money yet. I will see how it goes and maybe exchange it for the SR 80 if the sound really blows me away.

The 80's are tighter in the bass department, a definite improvement over the rocking 60's. The v6's would be beneficial for games though. Let us know what you think of the 60's when they arrive.
