Meine AKG K340 elektrostatisch-dynamisches System Kopfhörer sind gerade angekommen!

Since this seems to be a K340 love fest thread, here's some goodies I've acquired to add to the fun...

In the pic above, the small red splotches are where the original hot wires come in. Clip them off as shown (blue is negative, do the same). Connect the new input wires to the larger blotches of red for positive, blue negative. Leave the black wires on these posts to power the electrostat driver. Shown is two different styles of crossovers, etc.

Pic below is from AKG that another member posted on time.

Nice pics Larry... I had most of them, but not those last two. The drawing is sweet.

That was my impression too!

Well, with those latest pictures I can now confirm 3 versions of the K340. That particular pair appears to have the same cross-over electronics as mine, but the drivers & passive diaphragms are different. Then there's philodox's old pair where both the x-over & driver parts are different. Wonder how many more versions there are...

Wow, this has got to be confusing for anyone trying to modify their K340, much less for those of us who are simply curious to know the thinking behind it. One ad explicitly says "In the K340 no crossover network is required. Both systems are connected directly..." and another mentions "...dual transducers and crossover networks.."

The only thing I can think of that would make such a change necessary is differences in the dynamic driver through the production run. At some point they must've decided the dynamic's handoff to the tweeter needed extra help, perhaps because the dynamic had a rising response or some nasty resonant peaks, and at some other (later?) point they found a dynamic driver they could run wide open without electrical contouring.

Either that, or they simply listened to their hybrid brainchild and decided it sounded better without the crossover, as many of you have. The thing is, which description of the K340's innards represents AKG's final word on the matter?

UPDATE: The former. In all schematics AKG has published, there is no "crossover network" (ie, a passive circuit with a filtering function) and thus no need to bypass it. What looks like an inductor on a bobbin is a small step-up transformer for the electret. The tiny PCB it sits on contains resistors to allow the relative levels of the electret and dynamic drivers to be adjusted (in steps) in production. The crossover (specified by AKG as occurring at 4kHz) is strictly acoustic, helped by the electret's natural ability to produce lots of treble but not so much bass and the ease with which a dynamic driver can be tuned to emphasize the bass and midrange. The crossover is probably gradual, taking place over a few octaves.

Maybe they made them differently for different regions? One type to the US, one to Europe and the other to Asia? Maybe a possibility, but i wouldnt know why. Mine looks like the first one larry posted.

Hmmm...that one looks almost identical to mine, except the circuit board's a different colour (mine's brown) and the layout seems subtly different. The blue plastic part's the same as mine, except mine's grey.

I wouldn't be surprised if there turns out to be 10 different versions of the K340, then add in the colours and who knows how many combinations that works out to. I don't think I've seen 2 identical ones yet.

I think what they meant was no "outside" crossover network is (was) needed by my reading of the smaller add.

So's this one, just the lighting and I didn't correct the color...

Mine seems to be the one on the left at the Larry's post.

I want to add my impressions on comparing Mogami Neglex 2534 Microphone Cable to Military Spec 22 AWG Silver Coated Copper Wire with Teflon Insulation tahat I have tried for recabling the K340. The difference is not like day and night, but silver coated copper wire brings more clarity and better highs. At the bass section they are the same. So I have used silver coated copper for recabling the main cord.

Ps:Sorry for my poor English.

I have listened different kinds of music from various artists and various albumes. No one influenced me like the last one which inspired me to write these letters. Its: Mike Oldfield "Tubular Bells". An albume, I thougt that recorded while the K340 on the head. Its incredible journey to listen. If you close your eyes as well wow man thats incccrrrreeddiblee!!!

I am looking forward to hear which albumes do you like the most while listening to K340.

I beleive after matching the source - cord - amplificator there is another level and its the music that we forgot the most!

K340 continues to surprise me. I have listened to Pink Floyd "The Division Bell" albume and the beginnig of the first song killed me! Its incredible! What an headphone this is! Ok it does not reproduce bass as I have expected but what about everything else other than a very strong bass (It reproduces deep bass but not very strong). 3d, incredible! Mids, highs, bass extension, all are excellent! But 3d is something more than excellent. Its like the real world itself. I think if I am blind, I could hear the world as I am hearing it right now (I met some blind people at my campus, they came here for a national chess match and they not only hear above average but they also feel the surrounding world much and much more better than us).

On my AKG K 340, I played Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon', the Mobile Fidelity version, and it sounded incredible on the K340.

Great impressions guys. I particularily like music with spatial effects on the K340's. Stuff like The Junior Boys, DJ Spooky and any binaural recording. It is almost eery, sends chills down my spine.
