Good review. Agreed that they just don't do it for Metal, the "smooth" sound kinda kills any aggressiveness.

The FiiO E7 is not really much of an amp, it is mostly a DAC. Put the HD598s through a real amp and they shine through. Personally, I like my HD595s with metal. I feel that you get the slam that you don't get from Grados. Through proper amplification, they are smooth but fast (as odd of a combination as it sounds.)

I don't think you need an amp for 598s though, they go loud enough through most devices, laptops and iPods for example. Also, it has been discussed several times, that 595s and 598s are different headphones with different sounds and different drivers.
The 595s may be good with metal compared to Grados, but I have no experience with Grados so I am unable to draw the same conclusion. I can say I have read differently, and that Sennheiser HD 25-1 ii and Grados are generally accepted as being the best for rock and metal.
