When adjusting the volume from the BTS, does it control the phone volume or is it separate from the phone. Meaning, putting the volume up or down from the BTS, does it automatically put the phone volume up/down or do you still have to do that separately on the phone?

It truly depends on your transport device - while the BTS controlled my BlackBerry's volume, the iPhone still had an independant volume control.

I hear the bass roll-off and the slightly brighter sound vs direct from an iPhone 6s. Thanks for your review!

I am not 100% sure about the exact model numbers but these were some older by Philips, Sony and Samsung. Especially the Sony and Samsung were quite bad and had a noticeably high output impedance and produced quite some hiss.
All i know is that they were in the price range around €50 to 65.

Sorry to resurrect thread... wondering if these can be used constantly plugged in/charging, instead of only battery. I'm wondering if I could sometimes use it as a bluetooth receiver for my powered speakers.

This is indeed possible, however for a fully stationary solution, I'd probably recommend using a separate, dedicated stationary BT receiver device (assuming you are using relatively decent speakers and are listening concentrated of course) like for example the Mass Fidelity Relay that is the first BT receiver I couldn't tell from a wired source in a blind test.
