Can the DX90 power say, modded Fostex T50RP to a decent %-age of their desktop separates driven potential ? Can it bring some mojo to planars in general ?

I didn't think the DX-90 was robust enough to drive my HiFIMan 500s satisfactorily so I tried it. It can drive them and the sound isn't bad but they are definitely better amped. Forget my Audeze LCD-3s. Yes, you can drive them but nowhere near their potential. I'm guessing the Oppos can be driven as well as the new Audezes. The modded Fostex T50RP at 50 OHMs, I'd say yes decently.

First of all thank you very much for your wonderful review, I tried to drive my LCD2.2 and sounded quite well of course you need an amp to make the LCD to meet it's full potential. My only complaint for the DX90 would be it's playlist.

DX90s seemed to have a lot more "control" and power over the sound and it sounded pretty okay with HD650s and 600s. I think that the AK240 is the best for driving LCDs though.

My experience is the same as both comments above. The DX90 is pretty good at driving these headphones but in no way are they a substitute for amping them. The extra power is necessary to reveal all of the detail the planars like the LCD-2 can produce - especially the bass and lower-mids. The AK240 is a superb DAP and I'd love to own one. But man is it pricey. Running a DX90 into a Chord Hugo is my next move. This configuration using either the X5 or the DX90 has worked for a lot of people. The DX90's playlist and graphics is primitive at best. They made a lot of tradeoffs to keep the price down and that's one of the most troublesome.

I'm waiting for iBasso or Fiio's next models and saving up for the AK240 at the same time.
