The ear pads look identical to the ATH-M50, meaning there are many options of replacements on eBay. It was only last week I was looking at the Mk2, now this has caught my eye. Great review!

Nice review. Thanks for posting it. Any thoughts on differences between the open, semi-open, and closed versions of the Mk3?

Thanks for the review AnakKun

Very nice thanks, many reviewers such as headfonia always found even the most expensive modded RP2 to lack deep bass impact and from what I'm reading the exact same problem is still present in the RP3? Quite a shame when the original T50 from the 70's had such great bass but then again it was using much bigger drivers and wasn't quite costing $160.

What replacement pads are better for this?

The pads are way too shallow it seems, something like HM5 Memory Foam pads or similar should improve sound quite a bit

@headhog the comfort of both are quite similar to me. Bearing in mind my friend's Mk2 is like 4+ years old and more "seasoned". But I like the new headband from an aesthetic view.

@Music Alchemist, actually I've not seen them sold in Tokyo too! Fostex passed me this for review back in June and I had been busy with work till this past weekend.

@gr8soundz, I have to admit I'm unfamiliar with different open/closed/semi-open versions of the mk3. I thought there was only one version. The box my demo model came with has got a label, but I was told that it wasn't the final packaging (as such no pix of  the box).

@leeperry, I think if you're looking for deep bass, to be frank the mk3 wouldn't be it. The midbass is tighter but there's not much sub-bass.

@imran27 sorry, don't know what pad you could use with this. I think you'll need to look at after market brands. The design is different from the original Mk2. I'm not familiar with "HM5 Memory Foam".

They miss the opportunity to make it more Audeze-like, by skimping on the sub bass.

Since the pads no longer wrap around the edge, I wonder if Alpha Pads or Zach's ZMF pads will still fit?

Mark Up, why would they want to make it more Audeze-like?  I wouldn't exactly say Audeze is some embodiment of headphone perfection.  Let Audeze be Audeze, and other headphones be other headphones.

Great review and much appreciated. I am anxiously awaiting Amazon (US) to add the mkvIII to their inventory. Thank you!

How to they compare to Mad Dogs?

I haven't tried the Mad Dogs in a long time but if memory serves, the Mad Dogs has a somewhat bassier signature compared to this (and to the Alpha Dogs for that matter). To me I would actually put the T50RP Mk3 & Alpha Dog more into the similar category whilst the Mad Dog into the other side.

What about in terms of mods and value? Does the updated t50rp make it as good as the $300 Mad Dog or can it stand a few modifications to get to that level?

Have you ever listened to the Shure SRH840? If so, how would the T50RP Mk3 sound compare to that of the Shure SRH840?

I've never tried the SRH840 unfortunately so I can't comment on how the mk3 sounds relative to it.

Anyone tried to compare the newest version of Fostex T50RP Mk3 with Oppo Pm-3?

What, which alternative (even more expansive) if not this T50rp?:)
AnakChan

@Synthax, "expansive", do you mean greater perception of soundstage? If so, then I'd personally say something like the Fostex TH-900 would have a greater perception of soundstage - assuming we're sticking to closedback headphones. Of course if you start talking about open headphones, then there's probably a lot more options.

However the TH-900 does have a different signature from the T50RP Mk3's.

@AnakChan Even an open back, I just think your opinion can be very helpful for me. I'm looking for a headphones which can envelope a quality od Beyerdynamic Dt150, my vintage Sansui SS100(based on T50r Fostex vintage headphones... I do not like headphones which are too much bright or have naste peaks in some regions like 6khz...
