There are completely valid reasons to ship the device with a switch
1) Fiio can't boast an accurate frequency response with bass boost always on, the ultimate aim of these devices is transparency to the source material (i.e. what goes in comes out), if audible frequencies are meddled with to a perceptible level then transparency isn't possible.
2) If you're listening to an already bass-heavy master, or using headphones that respond better to lower frequencies (e.g. ath m50), it may be too dominant such that it becomes distracting, unpleasant, headache inducing or affective of your capacity for localisation, making the ability disable this coloration useful.
I appreciate you specifying the (lack of) difference between gain modes though.
You mentioned it's use outside the house, would you mind detailing it's consumption of pocket-space?

Thanks for the review! Although I would like to object about the bass boost - not all people like bass-heavy sound for example I listen to classical music and bass boost would be totally irrelevant to me. I have AD900x and some bass-heavy Sennheiser IEMs. Before buying my AD900x, the IEMs were my only way to listening to music, so I thought it was good to have that bass. However, when I got used to AD900x, you can't even imagine how much I started to hate that bass!
