Nice review, thanks. I too have both the hd600s and dt880s. As much as they overlap in some ways, i can't bring myself to get rid of either. So far, i have found that upstream, anything that sounds good with either sounds good with the other. Cheers and happy listening!

Thanks. Both are spectacular and definitely the top 2 in my collection. Sadly my HD600's have the cracked headband and are starting to chip paint in places. I am much more confident the DT 880 Pro will stand the test of time in terms of durability. I'm not even hard on my gear, so working professionals are much better off with the Beyers.

I had DT880 pro*250 and DT880*600, but sold them. I would have bought Bayer again after becoming 60 years :) Although the comments that I have, it's one of the best headphones for the money.

I have only heard the DT990 and LOVED their sound. Are the DT880 very close to the DT990 sound wise?

You still need to take a look at the AKG K/Q 701/702 range (just one will do - they're all basically the same) and the Senny HD650 to have heard all of the major mid-fi headphones. Although I don't consider these to be mid-fi headphones. IMO they all are HiFi, but just not top of the range.

Anyway I totally agree with your review on these, with one exception - the bass. I feel that they have plenty of bass for certain genre's such as classical and jazz where you don't really want tons bass thumping through your ears, yet for electronica I agree that they are a bit too neutral and lack the bass quantity and punch. But, hey, that's how it goes. I've almost always found that headphones that excel in a particular genre range often fail to deliver in other genres, and that those that do all genres simply do them acceptably.

I still think that the DT880s offer possibly the most bang for buck of any headphones available today.

Had 990 Pro 250 Ohm for 3 years, than switched to 880 600 Ohm. 990 is too harsh on treble, 880 is not very appealing with punchy music. But 880 600 Ohm still best for me. Details and soundstage is brilliant.

The MA900 I ordered will arrive today,  however by looking at more & more reviews of Beyer I am pretty sure I will be sending them back & getting the 880pro.  Being new at this,  listening to rock & classical,(in that order), 75% rock is where I enjoy music the most.  One thing I already know for sure is I will have to listen for myself to know.  I have to make a decision on amp/dac as well.  Might just buy the equipment listed above w/ the 880pro.  In that area I"m totally dependent on reviews. Any help in that area will be greatly appreciated.

it's funny seeing these old headphones have front page reviews again, either way well written

I am working on my DT 990 Premium (250 Ohm) review now. I can say for sure the 880 is the better headphone in all aspects. It will likely be the first I will be selling off. The 880 I find is not that picky with sources/amps either, they sound equally great on everything I've run them on.

Actually the 990 is a better compliment to the HD 600 than 880. Everything you might desire in HD 600 is to be found in 990 (sub-bass, wide soundstage, highs) and vise versa (Neutrality, tamed highs, and mid-range.)

If you have the HD 600, I say the 880 is redundant. Go with with 990.

I agree the 990's sound signature is more dissimilar to the HD 600 than the 880 is. However, it's dissimilar in ways I personally don't like. That is my subjective opinion, and I am entitled to it . If you ask me the DT 770 is the best compliment to the HD 600 among all the Beyers, largely because of it's isolation. And it never fails to please in those bass head moments no one wants to admit they get.

@slaphead I did audition the K/Q 701/702 line and actually prefer the K612 Pro overall, especially for the price. Bass on the 701/702's is anemic. I've also auditioned the HD650 extensively at head-fi meets, they sound identical to me. Any difference was more to do with amplification, which both do wonderful with, especially tubes.
