Just a quick reaction to cable swapping mentioned here....Im using Blue Dragon cable which significantly improved the overall performance of the headphones.

Interesting. I have always been kinda wishy-washy about how much (if hardly any) difference cables make. If I ever get the opportunity I would love to review and compare some more cables.

Nice review! I also own both the HD 700 and nighthawks and agree with some of your statements. How much burnin did you give your nighthawks?
What sources did you use for testing?
Have you tried the AQ protein leather earpads? They boost the treble and bass impact and change the sound signiture pretty dramatically. I enjoy pad rolling depending on preference and the song I'm playing.

Monoprice 8324 (not 8323) with shure 1540 alcantara pads I compared side by side with my AQ Nighthawks and HD700's and I prefer the 8324's, fun fact, they only cost $20 plus $40 for the earpads. earpads are a must 
sub bass is insanely good, and vocals of the Weeknd high pitch male vocals ooh my sounds amazing on the 8324's and it keeps it seperated from the sub bass that thumps really well, need a decent amp though, I use Fulla 2, but a Class A amp probably would do even better.
