Unfortunately I've never tried the K701 - so I'm unable to comment. The warmer signature would probably go well with them - but I'd really suggest that you see if you can find someone who may have actually used the pairing - and get their advice.
I just recieved the audio-gd NFB 12. I'm using mine with Sennheiser HD-600's and after some experimentation I end up using the 2x aliasing soft knee filter. smooth highs and not too much bass. Just FYI.
I just finished listening with Sennheiser HD-650's and found the 8X oversampling , Minimum phase apodising filter (MPAF) to sound awesome. Tames the bass pretty well. I gotta say I love this DAC AMP. It's so versatile. Being able to dial in the sound of the DAC to your headphones is great.
It's very versatile for an entry level dac/amp isn't it Nicest thing is that you can have best of both worlds at an affordable cost. I now have a LD MKIV as well - and depending on my mood, I'll either just use the NFB-12 dac and amp, or use the NFB-12 and output to the tube amp. It's a fantastic mid-level set-up without breaking the budget.
If you get a chance, give the 4x oversampling minimum phase soft-knee filter a try. It really is a nice mix between detail and warmth.
