'With regards to bass presentation, depth, impact, detail and layering, without a doubt, the LCD-3 and LCD-X are the two best dynamic headphones that I’ve heard that can offer bass so true to life, so clean and quick that they leave me smiling every time I put them on. I find that the LCD-3s are the slightly “more musical” headphones with bass that lingers a bit longer, mids that are lush and inviting and an overall laid back presentation that just feel like putting on a favourite pair of slippers; while the LCD-Xs offer a closer to reference presentation with slightly taughter bass and treble and imaging that is better defined"

Are these dynamic headphones?

Yes they are...they are ortho dynamic headphones.

Thanks for the review...
Darn it. Now I'm wondering if I should sell my LCD and migrate to the LCD-X...

As someone new to the planar magnetic world but certainly not headphones i have a new found understanding of what makes a good headphone and these lcd-x sound like my kind of headphone.  One thing though if i could ask, is the sound presentation with the angled pads easy to get into the music or do you feel like you have to have a quiet room and time to really focus on the music in order to enjoy it?  I'm asking because i love my hifiman's but when i initially put them on the way they emit sound makes it hard for me to get into the music unless its completely quiet and i lay down and relax and focus on the sound.  i've never had this problem with dynamic headphones. do does the improved soundstage of the lcd-x give it a more natural presentation that you think i could be more easily drawn into?  or do you think i should just go closed back?

MadMoxxi and kurochin:   what exactly are you asking for here?  They're planar magnetic so they're fast and detailed.  Need the sound signature then check out the frequency response charts at headphone.com.  They aren't sibilant and the soundstage is now more open the most popular known soundstage headphones like the t1, he-6, th-900 but still being beaten by the hd800.  Due to the flatter response and new transducer there is more instrument separation.  I think that covers it.  They aren't a purposely distorted headphone like w3000anni that causes a euphonic sound.  They're accurate.

also do these have that "dark" signature that audeze is known to have?  i don't know what it means as i have never heard one but i would like to.  or is this an un-dark audeze due to the flatter frequency response

These are the very natural sounding headphones and I would say they are less "dark" than either the LCD-2/3. That said, it's a toss up between the LCD-X and LCD-3...both are in the top rung of headphones that I've heard ever.

In these days of compressed music no one mention the dynamics of the headphones... my old K701 totally outperforms LCDs, staxes and top-sennheisers as dynamic range. You can not write a serious review avoiding this major aspect of the sound. But looking at the records used for the review I'm not surprised...

The area Audeze need to pick up their game is regards to weight and comfort. Heavier than LCD-3 is not acceptable.
We can hopefully expect headphones made out of super light composite materials and nano materials weighing much less in the future.
Headphones that truly disappear on your head.

brat: FTR, the Mahler Symphony is a rez download off of Chesky Records, PLUS I did listen to other high rez downloads for this review but didn't mention them all as there were plenty used over my weeks of listening prior to my review. The K701s have some of the most un-natural mids/upper mids I've heard...they are to real sound as Cheese Wiz is to cheese IMO (borrowed from Uncle Erik). The LCD-X's have an outstanding dynamic range and BEFORE you comment, I'd suggest you hear them on a system that can really let them show their stuff. And then you mention K701s out performing Stax headphones...really? :p

Sweden: They weigh only 50g more than the LCD-3s...50g.  :)

Nice review and great read MH.. I had a chance to audition the LCD3 and really liked them but if the X are a better all rounder (listen to everything from Sinatra to Deadmou5) then they may the complementary HP's to my HD800.

Thanks for the great review. I prefer the weightiness of the LCD3 myself and I'm very sensitive to treble, but everyone is different.
