My very personal opinion is that these sound artificial in the mids. String instruments sound quite unnatural and the soundstage goes sideways which I hear from most AKGs.

To me these sound the same as the K550s except the newer/different ear pads make it easier to get a good seal and provide a more comfortable fit. These are a great sounding pair and are driven quite easily.

I had the same thoughts about the Q701 when I owned them with the O2/Odac combo and hated it.
If you check my review of the T5p you'll see that I also found those artificial/electronic so this is something I'm used to hearing. However with the AK120 these sound full and natural.
Maybe you need a warmer source/amp for these.

It's been a long time since I tried the K550 so I can't comment on that but I definitely feel more impressed about what I'm hearing now compared to what I heard from the K550
