First PCB project, Bantam or Alien?
I built an Alien DAC during the PCB group buy. It is a huge improvment over the sound coming out of most motherboards. Worth doing once you know how to solder. This absolutly is NOT a beginner DIY. The PCM2702 DAC chip is in a SSOP28 package. Lead spacing is .025" Not a PCM2702, but...- AndrewFischer

DIY DAC/amp, drive bay
What sound card are you using? Some of them are terrible. There are some very small DACs out there.- AndrewFischer

best simplified PCB layout program for MAC OSX??
You might be able to get Olimex to make it as 2 or 4 boards on a 320x200 panel. Not ideal but you'd get around the Eagle limit.- AndrewFischer

best simplified PCB layout program for MAC OSX??
The board certainly has room for improvement. Olimex made the boards. Yes Olimex. They've improved. Still have the 1 euro charge for each drill not in the standard rack. I've got part libraries that use the .9 1.0 1.1 1.3mm before plating drill sizes so I don't have to pay the drill change...- AndrewFischer

I use Eagle. Added plus is that is is cross platform. I paid for a non-profit license version as some of my projects have grown to 160x100. Eagle has a bit of a learning curve but it isn't too bad. There is lots of help available on-line. Starting with current version, the licences...- AndrewFischer

Forgot to add -- Are you using RadioShack solder? Multicore or Kester in one of the smaller diameters makes it easier to get the right amount of solder on a connection. You don't have buy the expensive botique solder.- AndrewFischer

the answer to our prayers?? USB audio the holy grail??
This might be a stupid question, but why not use S/PDIF if you want more than 44.1kHz and 16-bit? Many computers have some sort of S/PDIF connector. The iMac I'm using at the moment has a mini TOSLINK connectors twinned with the analog headphone and microphone jacks. As I recall (correct...- AndrewFischer

Have you checked your source? Could be that there is only one channel from the source. If the amp chip is bad, something in your CMOY is burning them out.- AndrewFischer

Simple question regarding amp case
Kinda depends what the ground connection is for. Do you have schematic & construction plans you can show us? If it is there for safety, you can might be able leave it out since the case doesn't conduct. If there are any conductive parts that could touch the user (like a volume control shaft)...- AndrewFischer

cmoy power supply using transformers to run off of ipod battery?
The PTN04050C is also going to put switching noise on the power input. I don't know if the iPod has any kind of a filter. You may need to put a decent filter on the input. A 100uF cap is required, but a pi-filter might be needed.- AndrewFischer
