    Replacing a Single HD580 Driver

Have you checked for a hair in the left side's driver? That's what usually causes crackling on deep bass notes.

    Budget Tube Amp

What's your price range? Little Dot makes some great tube amps in the $150-300 range. Darkvoice makes even better tube amps, but they start at around $250 for the cheapest model.

    D2000 or HD650

What type of music do you listen to most often? If it's bass oriented, energetic music I'd suggest the D2000. If it's acoustic, laid back music I'd suggest the HD650.

    Why?

I think it has a lot to do with the quality of headphones that most people buy. In almost all cheap headphones, the mids and highs sound fake, but the bass sounds much more realistic. This is partially because it's easier to reproduce, and partially because humans don't hear bass so much as they...

Need help deciding which headphones to get!

I wouldn't get the 580, 600, or 650 if you aren't planning on picking up a dedicated headphone amp sometime soon. They really need amplification to get your money's worth out of them. I'd suggest the 555 or 595. They improve with amplification, but should sound good coming straight out of your...

iTransport - direct digital signal from ipods

Wow, that thing definitely isn't transportable. I was hoping for something that I'd be able to easily hook up to Headroom's portable DAC and a nice pocket amp, but it looks like this isn't it. I guess it would be good for somebody who's staying in a hotel and doesn't have a laptop that can...

    Upgrading from HD595 to HD650

The highs are a bit less forward, but they're also more refined. If you find the HD650s too warm and bassy you could always sell them and pick the HD580/600s, which have the same quality but are a bit brighter than the 650s.

    Want to get into foobar

1.) If you use the FofR configuration, all you have to do is drop the image of the album cover in the same folder as the songs you want to have that album art displayed for, and Foobar will load it in automatically. Just make sure the image is named cover, saved it as a jpg, and move any other...

    Best Albums Any Genre

The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out - Great album to test out the performance of your setup for jazz music. Has pretty much everything: sharp drumming, smooth sax, delicate piano, and a deep acoustic bass. Not to mention one of the best songs to ever come from the genre. Should give your setup a...

Glad to hear that you enjoy it. Give it some time to burn in and then think about rolling in some new higher quality tubes. It'll make an already great amp sound absolutely fantastic.

    Little Dot 2++ Tube Rolling

Is there any difference between CV4015 tubes with and without the M8161 labeling? I swapped out my original CV131s for a pair of these, and I'm not sure if I'm getting the same sound quality I would get if I were using some M8161 labeled Mullards. Compared to the EF92s: they reveal more...

volume: high on source or amp??

If you're using the line-out from your source, shouldn't you be setting the volume to 100%? If the minimum volume is too high, it's probably because you're using an amp with high gain with low impedance headphones, which isn't an ideal setup.

    AKG K701 vs Sennheiser HD650?

Both are great headphones but cater to different tastes. The HD650s are smoother and darker, very laid back and easy to listen to. The K701s are brighter and slightly more involving, and have what seems to be a larger soundstage than the HD650s due to their brighter sound signature. The 650s are...

What exactly Headphile does to 770 when it becomes Darth Beyers?

This is a little silly. Of course Larry has the right to protect his designs and not divulge information if he chooses not to. He's running a business, not a charity. Does that make him a bad person? Absolutely not, he put a lot of work into his design and obviously spent a lot of time...

Noob question about soundcards and DACs

Most USB DACs can only do 16/44.1khz for various reasons, and use USB power which can lead to bad sound quality. There are some exceptions such as the Benchmark DAC-1 USB, but for the most part dedicated standalone DACs will be of higher quality than USB DACs.

    HD580 advice

Try them out with your new amp and see how they sound. More so than most other headphones, the HD580/600/650 line will scale up with your equipment. To really get the best out of the 580s you'd need a nice tube amp though, not a portable solid state. Still, the 580s should be a significant step...
