Best Smartphone for audiophile Part II (Updated: Jan 2020)

Audio is a very subjective thing :) my use case is enjoying my CDs on the go with as close as possible dynamics within my reasonable budget. HTC10 was a good start and then followed it with the LG G5 with the BO module tucked in full-time - that helped me listen to my converted CDs in FLAC. I...

Best Smartphone for audiophile Part II (Updated: Jan 2020)

2 weeks with the Vivo X90 Pro Global and they managed to update the hifi list with Qobuz app support now - using the internal DAC through the analog Moto Z dongle (7.5 GBP so got 3) it simply sounds amazing! Of course IEMs don't do it justice so I'm mainly on my B&O Form 2 or the B&Q P7 wired...

Perhaps a T Mobile unlocked LG V60 would a be a good idea - I just had bad experiences with LGs as actual phones but for a music player it's probably your best bet

Best Smartphone for audiophile Part II (Updated: Jan 2020)

All If you plan on using with a dongle, battery life is an important factor. If it's used that may be something to consider. Another point is UAPP - are you playing local FLACs or also streaming via Qobuz/Tidal? If so you need a chipset to support streaming large files without latency...

Whilst I wasn't able to try it out personally, this comes to mind as an affordable AKM based dongle to sample the sound signature: https://headfonics.com/7hz-sevenhertz-71-review/

Tuning and implementation are possibly most important than the DAC chip itself. LG was successful because it partnered with B&O and Meridian. The Audio streaming app platform is key as well. I have had dongles that sound good and others that sound like crap both using the same chipset. It's...

That was my dilemma moving from LG G8X and Vivo Nex S into a modern flagship - if you can source a Vivo X90 Pro Global I would recommend it. Having the Hifi DAC built in alongside the app optimisations in Hifi mode is a key value add. You can then use big an analog dongle or the regular ones...

Best Smartphone for audiophile Part II (Updated: Jan 2020)

I had the same view on UAPP when I had it on my G5 with BO module then G8X - plasticity, clinical, harsh. I kind of wrote it off until the Vivo Nex S and now X90 Pro. Not sure what's the technical explanation here. Must be an LG thing as even Hiby FC3 which is ESS sounds fine with UAPP. Vivo...

Best Smartphone for audiophile Part II (Updated: Jan 2020)

Update: I had changed the UAPP settings so I wasn't actually accessing the hifi DAC. Took settings back to default and now HIFI mode is really on. The Vivo X90 Pro is truly Audiophile Grade, instrument separation, no distortion etc :) it's really like an LG flagship from 2023 just without the...

Best Smartphone for audiophile Part II (Updated: Jan 2020)

It really depends on the implementation and it seems Vivo does a good job with that. The Vivo Nex S has a CS DAC and it's the best analog sounding phone I ever had. It even tops out the LG G5 with BO module, HTC 10 and LG8X that I owned before it. The X90 Pro sounds good, probably better than...

Best Smartphone for audiophile Part II (Updated: Jan 2020)

Well coming from an LG G8X and Nex S, I would say Vivo X90 Pro with a Moto Z analog dongle sounds very close to an LG Quad DAC but with a CS signature. Vivo Nex S sounds that little bit better but I guess for 2023 flagships we may have a new king with the Vivo :)

Not sure how X90 Pro with CS DAC and no jack compares to an Xperia 1 V with plain QC DAC but an actual jack - curious if anyone has tested both?

Best Smartphone for audiophile Part II (Updated: Jan 2020)

Some interesting views to share - I just got the Vivo X90 Pro Global Version after learning it has all the latest flagship whistles as well as a CS43131 DAC built in. No 3.5 jack so I sourced a Moto Z analog USB C dongle to make sure I'm using the internal DAC. Vivo has a hifi mode for certain...

Best Smartphone for audiophile Part II (Updated: Jan 2020)

Not tried it but going by device specifications it will be a Qualcomm inbuilt DAC so wouldn't expect wonders. At this point it seems that anything past the Asus Rog5s timeline doesn't have an ESS/CS DAC built in except the Vivo X80 pro but that doesn't have a 3.5mm jack. Interesting to see if...

With USB C finally coming that makes sense as Qobuz would also go lossless natively u like Android - challenge is certain apps like Blackberry hub etc... don't work on iPhone it will be a major shift but look forward to hearing your experience shifting to IOS - I need encouragement :) On...

Best Smartphone for audiophile Part II (Updated: Jan 2020)

I will probably do that same but hard to find a deal! As it stands, I tried the G8X and Nex S as I couldn't source a decent V60. G8X was on A9 and stayed that way but is both laggy and screen is looking outdated with the notch. Strangely enough, Nex S has an older processor but performs much...

Best Smartphone for audiophile Part II (Updated: Jan 2020)

Since you are the Vivo expert, here comes the next question :) - Newer flagships like X80 pro have a built in CS43131 but no 3.5 jack Have you been able to test UAPP/Qobuz using an analog pass through dongle (and where to get one anyway?) to utilize the internal DAC? If so how is the quality -...

Best Smartphone for audiophile Part II (Updated: Jan 2020)

Hi Guys, It's 2023 so probably not many are still using the Vivo Nex S but I am :) So after trying the Russian workaround without success as well as messaging Vivo support to add UAPP and Qobuz to the HIFI list, I finally found a useable workaround :) - download a long empty MP3 (found an 8...
