DAC difference
Yep! They're 250ohm headphones. I assumed a receiver would have a more powerful headphone amp automatically but obviously I learned that lesson the hard way. But that's fine, I just wanted something to power some speakers affordably.- BrianovichIV

DAC difference
Thanks. I don't have a demanding cartridge, just the lowest-level LPGear Vessel, whatever that model is. It's perfectly fine for me and the turntable I have. I have no desire to go up to anything more than this, so I'm going to assume that any phono preamp will get the job done. I think you're...- BrianovichIV

DAC difference
I have kind of a tangential question that may not belong here. So I understand the point being made here, it makes sense, and I agree with it. I just got a new DAP and even though it has all these different (and updated!) specs it sounds the same to me. I bought it for size and features...the...- BrianovichIV

Hiby R3 Pro Portable Bluetooth DAP
So here's an interesting thing. I'm noticing that song titles with an apostrophe are adding spaces afterward, like this. Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening and how to fix it? It doesn't happen on my computer, it's not like that in the tag, and it doesn't happen on my old DX50...- BrianovichIV

Hiby R3 Pro Portable Bluetooth DAP
So I bit the bullet about bought the R3 Pro Saber...and I figured if it couldn't drive my Sennheisers I'd send it back. The good news is it does. It definitely sounds better on the high gain setting, though. Interestingly, it does power the 250ohm DT770s to a pretty loud volume...but the sound...- BrianovichIV

Hiby R3 Pro Portable Bluetooth DAP
I'm considering buying this DAP. I'm coming from an iBasso DX50, which I'm becoming really frustrated with (tiny screen, the buttons are uncomfortable, the interface is really slow, etc). Will the R3 Pro drive Sennheiser HD598s by itself? I also have a pair of Sennheiser Momentum On-Ears, as...- BrianovichIV

IEM Recommendations for a Fussy User
So this summer I'm looking to upgrade my mobile listening equipment. Right now, I use an iBasso DX50 and Sennheiser On-Ear Momentum headphones. I'm set on upgrading the DAP to a Fiio M9, but the headphones are a different issue. I want portability, so it seems like I should branch out to IEMs...- BrianovichIV

Supplementing Sennheiser HD598
So, I have a pair of Sennheiser HD598s that I really like, but I'd like to get a pair of headphones with a complementary sound signature. For example, while I like the open, airy, bright sound of the 598s, sometimes I'm in the mood for a little more bass, or a warmer sound. What is a good...- BrianovichIV

The iBasso DX50 Thread - Latest firmware: 1.9.5 - June 30, 2016
I still use mine on a regular basis. If I were in the market for a new DAP, I'd probably get another iBasso, most likely the DX80. But on a budget, you can't go wrong with this one. I used to use Rockbox and Doc's Final Firmware, but the latest official firmware from iBasso is fantastic and...- BrianovichIV

DAP with Best UI and Filing System?
I'd recommend the iBasso's. The UI is surprisingly good, and it allows you to read the microSD cards as a directory. I like this a lot because I can set up the file organization in a way that works for me. But iBasso's default indexing is also pretty good, it just takes a while to index. The...- BrianovichIV

Basic Turntable and Headphone Amp suggestions
Then I'll probably get the Magni. I could always use it with my iBasso too if I wanted to and it's not that expensive.- BrianovichIV

Basic Turntable and Headphone Amp suggestions
I'm looking to add a turntable and headphone amp to my listening experience. I live in a small space, so my rig has been entirely portable (iBassos and iPods). But I have a small area in which I can add a turntable, so I want to look into it. My headphones are Sennheiser HD598s and Sennheiser...- BrianovichIV

The iBasso DX50 Thread - Latest firmware: 1.9.5 - June 30, 2016
I've been a Doc's Ultimate Final Firmware user for the past year or so. Out of curiosity, I installed the new 1.9.5 last night and it's my new favorite. I listened to RAM last night (Archive Collection, Unlimited Edition) and it's fantastic. 3 Legs sounds like they're all playing right next to...- BrianovichIV

Portable Amp/DAC for phone, or High Res Portable Music Player
Fiio and iBasso seem to be the two most popular brands here for DAPs...they're both good. I look at it like the difference between Stratocasters and Les Pauls. Some people swear by one or the other (I'm a Fender guy, BTW). I buy most of my stuff on Amazon. But if you're not able for whatever...- BrianovichIV

Portable Amp/DAC for phone, or High Res Portable Music Player
I guess it depends on how much you're spending and what your preferences are. For example, I prefer to use dedicated devices and to keep things simple, so carrying 2 devices to listen to my music is overkill. I wanted a DAP with a better amp that was an improvement over my iPod classic. I could...- BrianovichIV

What's the proper way to store headphones (over-ear)?
I have 3 pairs of headphones that I store differently. I keep my Sennheiser HD598s and my AE 51st Studios on command hooks. They hang on the wall under one of my guitars. My Sennheiser momentums (on-ear) stay in a bag inside of my messenger bag. I wouldn't worry about using silica...- BrianovichIV

Whisky (or Whiskey) Fi
I just grabbed a bottle of The Dalmore 12-year and Crown Royal Reserve. Haven't opened the Crown yet but The Dalmore is very smooth, almost tastes more like a blend than a single malt.- BrianovichIV

A Raspberry Pi, an NAS, and an iBasso DX50
Part of the fun will be trying out different distributions to see which ones fit best. I'd also like to make a wooden box for it that will accommodate the iBasso and the Pi. I added the one you suggested to my list. I'd prefer to use a PC, but I just don't have the space. I'm prioritizing...- BrianovichIV

IBasso DX50 vs Fiio X3 comparison thread
I have heard that the iBasso is warmer than the X3. It certainly does have a nice warm sound. I've also heard that the soundstage is wider in the DX50, so you are correct, but again, that's just what I've heard. Have you ever used a Fiio headphone amp? I imagine the X3 will sound like one...- BrianovichIV

Sennheiser HD598 cable replacement suggestions
For Christmas, I got the ZY replacement cable from my Amazon wish list. I wanted it because the 78-foot-long cabe with the huge bulky connector was a huge pain to deal with. No, it doesn't sound any better, but there are some decided advantages, especially if you're a portable DAP user like...- BrianovichIV

A Raspberry Pi, an NAS, and an iBasso DX50
I found a Raspberry Pi v2 kit under the tree on Christmas morning, and I'm excited to make something with it. I've also been accumulating Amazon gift cards for a while and bought an NAS to tuck up on a shelf. First, let me say that I live in a tiny apartment and a kindergartener, so I don't...- BrianovichIV

IBasso DX50 vs Fiio X3 comparison thread
I have the DX50 and not the X3, but I will say this... I bought the DX50 (used) thinking it would tide me over for a while and I could upgrade to a newer model in the couple of years, or maybe get a Pono. But since I've had it, I have no desire to upgrade it. I think I'll modify an old...- BrianovichIV
