Audio-gd R2R DAC Thread
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the TCXO would smooth some jitter due to temperature, and the isolator would cut down unwanted noise (USB connections can be quite noisy). The higher model 7 has the TCXO as standard. For the same, the USB isolator is an option--but then not everyone use...- bitsnbytes

Do you have an all black version? Might be worth it for you to scrape off the paint for the ground points to make contact with the end plates (if it's black) and the black chassis. I don't recall the the post number but some called this the paint mod. I used sand paper to scrape off a bit of...- bitsnbytes

Hey plateau Burson got back, and suggested changing the caps--as you seem to be heading for. The caps are the four closest to the opamp. No time now for me to tinker but let me know if the upgraded caps work for you. I'm enjoying middle gain at the moment. For now I can live with the gain...- bitsnbytes

Half way charged, near fully and fully charged, and with power feeding in...still have drop outs. I also tried varying the source output (e.g., iPhone volume via lightning, PC volume > USB) to the Xduoo. That still had similar issues. I do notice that the V5i provides more...- bitsnbytes

XDuoo XD-05 Portable Dac/Amp Introduction - Impressions
Thanks for the update nplateau. I'll reach out to Burson on this. The strange thing is that I got a pair of the V5i and both units were behaving the same way. Initially it might play on high gain and then the amp would drop signal to the phones. Other times, it would not start at high...- bitsnbytes

Have you considered the Norne coaxial/minixlr adapters? No need to mess with drilling. Mods: grill and blutack if you plan to do the hard wiring and taking the drivers out.- bitsnbytes

You can look into a Topping TP60 class T amp as well. Make sure you get the newer 2014 version with upgraded caps. If you're uncomfortable with keeping the HE6 plugged in via taps. The Hifiman Adapter is a good consideration. You can just use the hifiman cable that comes with the 6. You do...- bitsnbytes

There's a big price gap between the 6 and 1000! I think the 6 is one of the best sounding HPs I've heard, regardless of price. With the usual caveats (eg amping, mods) of course.- bitsnbytes

Curious...how do the modded HE6s stack up to the STAX? I'm loving the HE-6 with oohgourami's vegan back felt mod and think it's almost optimal to my listening experience. I'm just wondering where you guys place the 6 in preference (although there might be some bias in this specific thread)- bitsnbytes

thanks @ohhgourami -- I just did the vegan backside felting, not realizing that it's pleather underneath. Wanting to keep the protective liner, I just cut a felt donut and slipped it underneath the pad. There is much less edginess from the reflections. This should be a requirement with...- bitsnbytes

I think ThurstonX already has a nicely modded 500, which is not that far from the 6 (well, compared to the 560). If economics come into play (in this hobby??), then I'd like to refer back to:- bitsnbytes

The Lyr would drive the 6, but some have reported not liking the pairing. If you already have speaker amps, you just need to re-terminate the cable, or get Hifiman's Adapter for $100. A T-class amp and a couple of 10ohm resistors will probably set you back $250. $700 (bargain!) for a used...- bitsnbytes

I'm a convert to modding. It refreshed my HE-560s into a better set of headphones IMO. Regarding the HE-6, go for it. I have a set, modded that too, and it's quite a complementary to the 560s. I think the 6s are worth 2-3x that, especially with the right sources. Of course, I'm biased.- bitsnbytes

I'm surprised they didn't have a demo unit--but then they probably sold it. I can understand the concern about frying your equipment. Fortunately I haven't had problems with my step down transformer...but then it's not like I have expensive stuff connected to it. BTW, if you're...- bitsnbytes

Perhaps bring your HD800 over to try with the BHA1? This might be the impetus to go with the bundle if your Senns sound good on that. Regarding the voltage difference, you can also try a step down transformer -- I don't think it adds any more noise (in fact probably helps with that). The...- bitsnbytes

I had always thought the HE-500 was the successor to the HE-6. At least in terms of being easier to drive. And now those are discontinued, in favor of the HE-560 as people wanted comfort as well. To me, the 6 remains the best I've heard, with the 500 close (rather it's just different). The 560...- bitsnbytes
