New Dragonfly Black and Red Discussion

The Dragonfly v1.5 is the second generation of Dragonfly dacs and at the time it was first offered was not known as "the Black": it was just the only one available. I also started with that one. Black and Red are the third generation Dragonflies. They differ in price and sound signature. Most...

New Dragonfly Black and Red Discussion

I have read reviews stating that if you have the red, there is no need to upgrade, the difference being tiny. This is also my experience. Anyway, to compare the two, you should prabably use a jitterbug with the red...

New Dragonfly Black and Red Discussion

Samsung Galaxy S5: here nothing changed with version 1.7: the default volume is still low but raising it in UAPP still works. Status quo is not problem for me: UAPP opens automatically when I plug the OTG cable into the socket, so it is very easy to set a high volume before leaving the app and...

New Dragonfly Black and Red Discussion

Hi Cribeiro,   Please, continue caring for your wife and children!   It seems our stances are not such far apart. I am just a bit more suspicious than you as to the power of Technology.   For sure, I could live with a dac/amp which lets through commands from headsets, under the condition...

New Dragonfly Black and Red Discussion

From Cribeiro:   Cons (as a device developed "for mobile phone use"): it is missing the classical support of headset functionality Android support is not guaranteed     To Cribeireo:   I agree with gheorge. In the audio world, less is often more.I would not expect from a firm trying to...

New Dragonfly Black and Red Discussion

I actually use the DFR on the go, without any warming up. But if you compare two devices, you should give them the same chances, both being warmed up or both with a 'cold start'.

New Dragonfly Black and Red Discussion

Audioquest say DFR shall also be warmed up one day before being measured. Did you warm up both devices before comparing them?

    Android phones and USB DACs

To my knowledge, the update is not carrier dependent here in Switzerland. I suppose I get them from Samsung. And I actually was in Rome in Italy as the smartphone started to update, with data set off.

    Android phones and USB DACs

I got an update of Android 5 on my Samsung Galaxy S5. No idea which version precisely: probably 5.01 or 5.02, since the system information just shows '5.0'...   The Audioquest Dragonfly works again with apps other than UAPP (TuneIn, Spotify, SoundCloud etc.), thanks.   The Dragonfly lights...

    Android phones and USB DACs

cskippy:   "If you own a Samsung Galaxy S5 don't update to 5.0 lollipop.  I had usb audio working for all applications including YouTube and Netflix on 4.4.4.  Once I updated to 5.0 the phone does not recognize any OTG cable or DAC.  "     I have noticed a similar problem:  ...

    Android phones and USB DACs

Galaxy S5 Android 5.0 Lollipop, OTG cable, Dragonfly 1.2   The first time I tried Spotify, it worked, the fly glew up green for 44.1. The sound was actually better than with Android 4.4.   For several weeks now, the Android does not recognize the Dragonfly anymore and persists sending the...

    Android phones and USB DACs

In my understanding, the Samba protocol works only on a local network. When on the go, if I want to play music on UAPP, which still is on the WDMyCloud NAS, I don't stream it, I download it to the handy, so I can feed it to UAPP.   Since I cannot choose whereto the files are downloaded (the...

    Android phones and USB DACs

Managing audio files for use with USB Audio Player Pro I am using UAPP with much satisfaction. The audio files I listen to are in the Sounds directory of the external SD card. I select them navigating the directories. UAPP did build a kind of a media server with artists and albums but I...

    Android phones and USB DACs

First, it would be really fine to know from you whether the set up described in the message cited by you works or not: just starting UAPP on the Xperia and defining a Network to an external disk. You can define several distinct ones but must select the one you want before playing...

    Android phones and USB DACs

This is a late answer to a question asked in August concerning the smb URL in USB Audio Player Pro (UAPP) for accessing media sources on other devices: http://www.head-fi.org/t/595071/android-phones-and-usb-dacs/5220#post_10810592. Samba is a file transfer protocol which makes Unix/Linux...

    Android phones and USB DACs

You will certainly hear the benefits of an external DAC even with no so expensive phones.   Phones can certainly not render what the source of sound does not deliver. With an external DAC you care for the source. I am using the Dragonfly 1.2 with great satisfaction. Invest also into good...

    Android phones and USB DACs

DanBa: There was such an attempt, but it was unsuccessful. eXtream Software Development (i.e. UAPP software house) has developed a USB audio service that other music players can use to stream their decoded audio to USB DAC, but the other developers have not finally followed up.   Read the...

    Android phones and USB DACs

The people at JRiver,  the best known media center under Windows, have managed to write a WDM driver, which redirects the sound from any application to the JRiver program, so all sources on the Windows PC benefit from the sound qualities and the sound revamping capabilities of the program. Data...

    Android phones and USB DACs

Hmmm... in French we way: on ne peut être sûr de rien - you cannot be sure of anything. Also technological miracles must be questionned.   I am just repeating what I read about volume control.   Now, I also observe that the volume of applications other than UAPP are automatically set to...

As to that Galaxy S5 - Dragonfly affair...  (http://www.head-fi.org/t/595071/android-phones-and-usb-dacs/5415#post_10917251)   I always plug the OTG cable with the DAC first, before starting any audio app. This is an evidence for me. What changed in the second series of tests: in case the...

    Android phones and USB DACs

Thank you for your help. I did real life testing, which did take some time, since I do not only listen to my smartphone... I can live with the residual problems and send you the following comments as a feed-back.   The unpredictability of the connection of the Dragonfly to the Galaxy S5...

Comment by 'rhadorn' in article 'Audio Connections between components -- Digital and Analogue'

The information about USB digital audio above is very useful. More extended it could help cooling down the overheated discussions about cables... I personally would like to read more. - What are the specificities of USB audio data transmission? I suppose there is no control on the quality of...
