From the windows world, I just downloaded and used iGain which lets you select songs based on various things (e.g. all in a playlist) and then runs for a while. It didn't really make any impact on my songs, but I don't use EQ. I was hoping it would help with sibilance in the loud songs.

Why would line out be better for ease of use? That seems unlikely to me, considering you lose the ability to charge the unit or attach any other accessory.
