Hard usage really cannot be the reason . There are all sorts of used portables available on the second hand market. These Senns must have been advertised, but never really produced in substantive numbers. IMHO.

you need to peek into the driver and check for the magnet disc with holes in it in circles there is a mesh sheet in front of the driver so it is pretty damn hard to take a good picture to help you out there is plenty of details about these rectangular shaped headphones in this thread
