Grado e Series
After another week or so, I think I'm going to trade in my pair of GS1000es for an LCD-2. Maybe my expectations were just too high, and after auditioning the GS1000is numerous times out of just my smartphone, I felt the changes they made either were in the wrong direction or just not right for me.- joe50000

After taking off the bagel pads, I've discovered that the gs1000e has the same raised drivers that the rs1e has. What effect do you think this has on the sound quality? I've auditioned the gs1000i many times but I find the gs1000e has a smaller soundstage and the instrument separation isn't...- joe50000

Grado e Series
Well after spending time with my PS500es, I think i'm in love. I didn't think there was a headphone that was better than the GS1000i in the lineup. This is a headphone that really challenges the HD800 when it comes to instrumental reproduction and realism. What hit me was that for the...- joe50000

Not at all. There just minor changes like having a detachable cable or no bumps and memory foam ear pads until the K712 came out with real changes to the sound signature.- joe50000

The GS1000e has a better soundstage, and is really, really, really, incredibly, amazingly detailed. The bass is slightly loose but very punchy. Treble can be peaky and fatiguing. The PS500e is dead neutral, but the bass and treble aren't rolled off. The bass is much tighter with almost...- joe50000

Soldering is easier than you think, although it is definitely not worth it to buy a soldering gun, solder, and then bother to work on it. Just buy a new pair.- joe50000

The packaging is definitely different, although I can't really tell much of a sonic difference. I A/B tested the rs1i and the rs1e blind, and I thought the rs1e is more or less the same. There's really nothing new here, just a marketing ploy to get people who have never bought a grado or were on...- joe50000

To be honest, if you're going to buy a set of Grados, you're always going to want to upgrade to get that extra little nugget of audio juiciness. So I'd say that the next logical step for you is either the GS1000e or the PS500e.- joe50000

THE DIY HEADPHONE STAND THREAD
Headphone amps need stands too. The rubber feet under the Lyr and hardwood is leftovers from Home Depot, and the legs are from Ikea.- joe50000

I can't wait for this meet. I've literally been frothing at the mouth to demo some of this equipment. Question though: is it okay that I bring my own headphones? I know this might sound selfish, but I don't want to let others demo them for hygenic reasons...- joe50000

Best headphones for Classical music?
Definitely a vote for the AKG Q701s here. Great instrument separation, and the music is crystal clear with a neutral presentation. They're a little fast sounding, but that's only compared to more laid back headphones like the HD650s. Your Magni/Modi should drive the Q701s just fine.- joe50000

are expensive headphones really worth it?
I've found that the best way to appreciate high-end audio gear is to listen to them for a solid week using good equipment and source material, and then go back to what you were using before. Only then can you really appreciate the value of high-end audio.- joe50000

AKG k702 amp
Is a Schiit Lyr too much power for these cans? I don't want to blow them... my HD650s sound great at the 9 o'clock position on my amp but I don't want to blow my Q701s with too much power...- joe50000

Hifiman HE 400 vs Sennheiser HD 600
Considering the kind of music you'll be listening to, I heartily recommend the HE-400s. A magni/modi will drive it just fine. But as another headfier has informed me, you'll want a headphone amp that can output a lot of power. The HE-400s are really best suited to solid state amps; the...- joe50000

best headphone amp for the sennheiser hd600 or hifiman he400?
It depends on a lot of factors.... Will you be running multiple sources to the same dac/amp? Are you going to have speakers running out as well as headphones? Do you have any space limitations? What is your source? Computer audio, CD player, vynyl?- joe50000

Review by 'joe50000' on item 'Sennheiser HD 598'
The Sennheiser 598 is the new the ruler of the sub-$300 roost. If you're looking for a headphone with an expansive sound stage that is at once both intimate and expansive... If you can't shell out for a Hi-Fi set of cans like the HD600/650 and the necessary amp to drive them well.... ...- joe50000
