After another week or so, I think I'm going to trade in my pair of GS1000es for an LCD-2. Maybe my expectations were just too high,and after auditioning the GS1000is numerous times out of just my smartphone, I felt the changes they made either were in the wrong direction or just not right for me.

Not at all.  There just minor changes like having a detachable cable or no bumps and memory foam ear pads until the K712 came out with real changes to the sound signature.

The GS1000e has a better soundstage, and is really, really, really, incredibly, amazingly detailed.  The bass is slightly loose but very punchy.  Treble can be peaky and fatiguing.     The PS500e is dead neutral, but the bass and treble aren't rolled off.  The bass is much tighter with almost...

Soldering is easier than you think, although it is definitely not worth it to buy a soldering gun, solder, and then bother to work on it. Just buy a new pair.

To be honest, if you're going to buy a set of Grados, you're always going to want to upgrade to get that extra little nugget of audio juiciness.  So I'd say that the next logical step for you is either the GS1000e or the PS500e.

I plan on attending but I won't be bringing any gear... it seems that other head-fiers have me covered.

I'm making the leap into the world of Grado headphones now -    Is the PS500 really worth twice as much as the SR325is?

The HE-300 beats the pants off of everything sub-$300 now that it's $150.

Definitely a vote for the AKG Q701s here. Great instrument separation, and the music is crystal clear with a neutral presentation. They're a little fast sounding, but that's only compared to more laid back headphones like the HD650s. Your Magni/Modi should drive the Q701s just fine.

I've found that the best way to appreciate high-end audio gear is to listen to them for a solid week using good equipment and source material, and then go back to what you were using before.  Only then can you really appreciate the value of high-end audio.

Is a Schiit Lyr too much power for these cans? I don't want to blow them... my HD650s sound great at the 9 o'clock position on my amp but I don't want to blow my Q701s with too much power...

It depends on a lot of factors....   Will you be running multiple sources to the same dac/amp?   Are you going to have speakers running out as well as headphones?    Do you have any space limitations?   What is your source? Computer audio, CD player, vynyl?
