The Stax Thread III
I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but it seems like one of the only places to do so. Are the below Summit-Fi STAX headphones worth buying over something like the HD650? My friend and I went to an audio meet a couple of years ago and took turns listening to the SR-407 and...- ToddTheMetalGod

Looking for an open-back headphone that excels with vocals and is dynamic...
HD650/HD600 would be my personal choice. Good dynamics, scales well with upstream equipment, and has a quite flat, smooth midrange/highs.- ToddTheMetalGod

The Entry Level Stax Thread
Hi. I'm considering ordering a STAX SR-2170 system from Japan because Amazon Canada has them for $636 with free shipping. Since this amp uses a wall-wart power adapter, it should be no problem to replace it with a 12V 4W DC supply designed for 110V/120V. I was just wondering if any of you...- ToddTheMetalGod

Which is better? Aux out to headphones or headphone jack to headphones?
The headphone output port contains an amplifier circuit in the output, to give your headphones more power to drive them. If you're using an external amplifier I would suggest using the auxiliary output (to avoid double amplifying and making the signal quality a tiny bit worse), but otherwise...- ToddTheMetalGod

WEE - new product from Woo Audio
Thanks! If I end up doing it I'm just planning on a single Seductor, if I had more money I would personally prefer to buy a Stereomour II. Thanks for offering an alternative solution, though .- ToddTheMetalGod

WEE - new product from Woo Audio
Could someone please tell me whether or not the output impedance of the speaker amp makes a difference in the function of the Woo WEE? I'm thinking of eventually buying a Bottlehead Seductor and WEE to drive a pair of STAX SR-507, but I want to wire the Seductor for 4-ohm speakers.- ToddTheMetalGod

NEW 2015 - HIFIMAN HE400S
I hope these are the tuning successor to the HE-400, after selling mine I realized I would miss the planar bass impact of them. I like the 2.5mm mono plugs and the silver colour. Hopefully if they meet expectations they aren't too expensive in Canada due to the exchange rates.- ToddTheMetalGod

WAV Sounds The Best (To Me)
Why don't one of you rip a WAV file from a CD, then convert the WAV to FLAC and compare the waveforms of both files in an audio editing tool. That's the best evidence we can get. Math already dictates that they should be identical, so compare the waveforms and prove it. This simple argument has...- ToddTheMetalGod

Worlds oldest profession
Well a profession requires pay in some form, so I don't think it would. There's no money, trade, or exchange of services involved in hunting/gathering. The resources of a hunter/gatherer society would likely be pooled and rationed, so maybe it could count depending on your view of the matter...- ToddTheMetalGod

Worlds oldest profession
I personally think prostitution is. Not in the modern, traditional sense... but simply trading sexual acts for resources, protection, etc. There's theories that suggest even animals such as penguins (females take stones from males' piles after sex) and chimpanzees (male chimpanzees offer meat in...- ToddTheMetalGod

Have I been lied to my whole life?
The reason that it sounds bad is probably mostly due to being underpowered. The first time I heard the HD650 was out of an iPod unamped and I hated them, but amped they're one of my favourite headphones. Just because it produces sound, doesn't mean it is powered properly. The HD650's impedence...- ToddTheMetalGod

WAV Sounds The Best (To Me)
Just came to add my input. WAV shouldn't sound better than FLAC. If the files have been converted properly, then when the FLAC is decoded it is the exact same as the WAV... bit for bit. They're both bitperfect formats and should in proper playback scenerios output exactly the same data, not one...- ToddTheMetalGod

Replacement for HD650 - Not satisfied
Makes sense, that way the amplifier has headroom to produce the dynamic peaks properly.- ToddTheMetalGod

Replacement for HD650 - Not satisfied
Yeah. For me coming from a library of mostly probably 6-9 dB dynamic range, it's so much more relaxing and natural to listen to some 12 dB or higher DR music. But 20 dB just feels plain odd compared to the rest of my library, or maybe it's just that album. Most of my well recorded material is...- ToddTheMetalGod

Replacement for HD650 - Not satisfied
I'm not really interested in the conversation much in this thread, I was just skimming threads... but you guys are overestimating dynamic range. Look up some dynamic ranges in here: http://dr.loudness-war.info . Even Bach, Mozart, and others are below 20 dB maximum dynamic range. I've got...- ToddTheMetalGod

☯️ Cavalli Audio's Liquid Carbon... a $599 Cavalli amp???
From what I've read, under 1% distortion is practically impossible to detect audibly. It doesn't really matter anyway, since the driver distortion of any headphone will be magnitudes higher than that. Other factors matter much more. Also, I don't think there's any headphone that will need that...- ToddTheMetalGod

The (new) HD800 Impressions Thread
If the person is willing to up their budget a bit, $400 can get the Gustard H10 and Nuforce HA200. Also if they're willing to go tubes, Bottle Crack with Speedball and Valhalla 2. I might not have heard the HD800 with a high-end amp/DAC (aside from Questyle CMA800i), but it can sound good with...- ToddTheMetalGod

What sample rate should I set my Modi 2 at in "Playback Devices?"
It's best to leave it at 16-bit 44.1 kHz if that's the only file type you'll play because it might prevent it from software re sampling. Of course, if you use 24-bit 96 kHz then leave it with that setting.- ToddTheMetalGod

Help! Schitty CLIPPING from the Modi, or.....?
New versions of UTorrent has been found to have a Crypto-currency miner in it, I'd suggest uninstalling it and replacing it with Deluge or qBittorrent. https://torrentfreak.com/utorrent-quietly-installs-riskware-bitcoin-miner-users-report-150306/ That's likely why you were getting jitter, it...- ToddTheMetalGod

Is it possible to combine Headphones and a Subwoofer?
You might hear a sound delay from the distance between the subwoofer and headphone drivers. Maybe you'd be better off buying a bass shaker and attaching it to where you sit when you listen.- ToddTheMetalGod

Is r/headphones a cesspool or is it just me?
In my opinion, Reddit is mostly just a cesspool overall. The down-voting system causes popular, generally uneducated opinions/ideas to dominate and unpopular, sometimes correct opinions/ideas to disappear. It's a bad system if you ask me. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of good threads and...- ToddTheMetalGod

Help! Schitty CLIPPING from the Modi, or.....?
Hmm, weird. It may be a problem with the media player you're using, maybe it's configured wrong. Is it your recordings perhaps? I don't think it's a hardware issue if Youtube is working perfectly fine.- ToddTheMetalGod

Help! Schitty CLIPPING from the Modi, or.....?
I mean that you should make sure your hard drive is fast enough to read the file without delay. I doubt that's the issue, but it's worth checking into. I'm not really sure what could be causing it, perhaps too much USB bandwidth is being taken up?- ToddTheMetalGod

Help! Schitty CLIPPING from the Modi, or.....?
That's probably jitter. Try playing with sample rating/bit depth, try unplugging all the USB devices you can, make sure you're not doing anything CPU intensive, and make sure you're getting enough bandwidth from your drive to read the music file properly. Those are a few of the things that can...- ToddTheMetalGod
