    Alien DAC v1.1 Construction Thread

    My shopping list at Farnell, should it interest anyone. I make no promises as to whether this list is complete or not, or made of the best components available - I've gone for good specifications, good price, and a few different types of capacitor for CL/CR - Sanyo SH should sound nice from what...

    Enter you waist size here...

    36-38, depending on the trousers in question. I'm 6'2 and around 18 stone, though it does go up and down all by itself.

    Straight from the tap. We have nice water here. --Rich

    Head-Fi System Upgrade Glitch Log

    Yeah. I log in, do some browsing, then part-way through it'll change from head-fi.blah to the IP address in the browser address bar. When it switches from one to the other, I then get kicked out and have to log in again. It's driving me bonkers, as I can't keep up with which posts have been...

    Blu-Ray

    I'm a slow-adopter of technology. I don't even have a DVD player yet . I did have one, but I took it back because it broke, and they didn't stock that model any more. so I got my cash back. There are so many formats that come and go, without having a significant impact on the market. Despite...

    Can you identify these headphones?

    Am I good to you, or what? That picture was a stock image ofthe headphones, super-imposed over the rest of the artwork . --rich

    Wow, finally got them (HD480 mkII)

    I put mine on last night and fell in love with them again. What are the differences between the 480 and the 480II? Looking over that Warzone site, I've just realised the difference between supraaural and circumaural(this isn't related to the above question, btw!) - I'd always though it would...

    Gold Plated Copper - Yes, GOLD!

    Aye, gold be pointless. The difference between silver and copper is so small, personally, I'd not worry about it unless the price difference was negligible. Gold is the best metal for reflecting/radiating heat, I believe? McLaren F1 engine bay, anyone? --Rich

    Creative Sound Card Users: How do you have your settings configured?

    Audigy2 SE / NX Both are just straight through - upsampled to 48khz by ALSA, no bass or treble fiddling... Line-out to my Sansui AU-G11X amplifier, headphones powered through the headphone socket on the amp. Loudness feature on the amp is never used on headphones, but is used at low(pre...

    Audigy2 NX - 44.1 -> 48khz upsampling

    ^Heh, Kubuntu rocks . Standard audio driver these days is ALSA - there is a low-latency driver called Jack, but I don't think it offers any improvement in terms of sound quality. But I'm clueless, so expect to be proven wrong . Quote: Originally Posted by Ihmemies How about 44,1KHz...

    Old Gear

    My amplifier was made in 1985. My Rogers speakers are a few years older, I believe. My laser printer was made in late 1992. My headphones are a year or two newer. Followed by my Celestion speakers - 1997 or so. Age makes no odds. If it's good, then it's good.

    Audigy2 NX - 44.1 -> 48khz upsampling

    Was sitting here watching a film, and thought to myself just how spectacular it sounded. Then it dawned on me - the audio was 48khz, so no upsampling was taking place. Figured I'd do some testing at the end of the film. Ripped my current benchmark CD(Acoustic Alchemy - Arcan'um) to FLAC. Then...

    Time to get in shape: What is YOUR personal work-out?

    I ride my pushbike up to my grandmothers 2 or 3 times per week. It's a 20-mile round trip, mainly along the canal. I also ride down to my sisters 3-4 times per week - 6-7 miles round trip - roads and country-lanes. Thats about it. Unless I'm working on the cars of my friends & family...

    5g ipod may not be all it's cracked up to be

    http://hifiipod.co.uk/?page_id=65 The difference between channels is around 0.2dB. Do you really think that such a small difference is going to make one side of the headphones blow, and not the other? I don't keep up with portable audio, nor have I heard of these problems with an iPod. But...

    Wow, finally got them (HD480 mkII)

    There is a good chance that they'll grow on you . There comes a point in audio where people tend to lose interest in pure reproduction, and prefer the colouration of certain headphones or loudspeakers. I find the overall balance between neutrality and energy/attack is just right for me. Each...

    Legacy is a nice car. Impreza is nice too - I miss mine, sometimes... but only the noise, that lovely burble from the unequal-length headers... I've been carless for several months now. Even when I did have one, I hardly touched it. I'd lend it to my friend for months at a time, as it was...
