Assuming you want to spend the same amount in either situation, I would say in general, a separate amp will give you more gain for hard to drive cans and will probably be a better amp than an DAC/amp combo. High impedance cans need voltage. The downside is that you lose some portability factor...

This is kind of a weird poll because the Q701s are open cans, and feel out of place here. That said, if you don't mind the slight bump at 2KHz, then Q701s are pretty neutral and detailed. I love my pair.
