Byerdynamic DT880 - 250 ohms or 600 ohms with my amp?
I don’t have a ton of experience with the DT880s on portable devices admittedly. I found I needed max volume on my Android phones, and still wanted a little more oomph, but that is also down to preference. I agree with your sentiments on amplifier output impedance, it can certainly warm things...- Strangelove424

Byerdynamic DT880 - 250 ohms or 600 ohms with my amp?
Tyll's comparison of the 3 DT880 versions (including measurements) is still valid today and worth a read. https://www.innerfidelity.com/content/comparison-beyerdynamic-dt-880-32-ohm-dt-880-250-ohm-and-dt-880-600-ohm-headphones Personally, I feel the DT880-600 is a headphone from yesteryear...- Strangelove424

HD600 Grille Symmetry
I have taken apart my beloved HD600s in order to remove hairs. It's a very organic hobby, this headphone thing. My speakers don't smell like me or have hairs caught in them. Anyway, the process of unsnapping the plastics apart caused me much stress and consternation, and in the process I have...- Strangelove424

Tools for Analyzing the Quality of Mastering
That's what everyone is trying to do. Ironically enough, I think there's a pretty good concentration of old school outlooks here, but an amp or source don't make someone old school. In my experience, alcohol makes the forums so much better. I'll join you! :beerchug: Numbers, schnumbers! Who...- Strangelove424

Tools for Analyzing the Quality of Mastering
The tools are in the hands of the user, what he does with it (or fails to do) is in his hands. A very typical perfectionist debate has ensued and both sides are demanding perfection (either from a subjective creative process or an analytical tool) and such perfection will never be found. These...- Strangelove424

Tools for Analyzing the Quality of Mastering
Loudness and dynamics are not really the same thing. Lullaby music has low dynamics because it is meant to be calming, but it is also not typically thought of as "loud". There are many things that go into making a good album, and many things that go into screwing one up. Lack of dynamics, or...- Strangelove424

Tools for Analyzing the Quality of Mastering
Just as an aside: It occurred to me a while ago that these measuring tools were only good at coming up with numbers, not interpretations, or much less decisions. If you like the dynamics and sound of a song, you really don't need any waveforms or numbers to prove it to you. That makes these...- Strangelove424

Tools for Analyzing the Quality of Mastering
I meant in terms of style. Particularly in the remasters, since those are the only examples where one can make a direct comparison of old vs new mastering on the same song. Though its impossible to get in the head of every musical engineer, the style of the older masters seems to save peaks for...- Strangelove424

Tools for Analyzing the Quality of Mastering
It's not so much that the peaks are sacred as the quietness is. Everything is relative, a -30db lull followed by a -5db peak is the same thing as -25db/0db. Hitting peak is not the problem, but if you raise floor enormously, and spend much of the time hitting peak level, than peak starts to lose...- Strangelove424

Tools for Analyzing the Quality of Mastering
5.1 mixes tend to be better. I think they assume the equipment will be decent and they usually let the mastering artist have a little more room to play. The problem with identifying remaster versions is that it is often unclear which remaster one has heard. I am particularly not fond of the...- Strangelove424

Yes, too much swagger, dancing ability, and crotch insinuation for the public to handle at the time. And if the real King of Rock'n'Roll showed up as a black man well... they'd have gone running for the hills...- Strangelove424

Tools for Analyzing the Quality of Mastering
I can't speak directly to your 5.1 DVD, but I was extremely disappointed with a modern remaster of Fleetwood Mac's Rumors on Spotify. Not sure I heard clipping, but it was definitely harsh to my ears and brought out the worse in the micing of the singers. After finding only modern remasters on...- Strangelove424

Tools for Analyzing the Quality of Mastering
I had forgotten about this thread, and was glad today to see somebody take an interest in it again! The goal of it initially was to take the mystery and obfuscation out of mastering arguments or purchasing decisions, and give people the tools to pinpoint differences in masters they heard. (It...- Strangelove424

The DSP Rolling & How-To Thread
I only have experience using a de-esser on dialogue in editing. Never applied it to overall sound track or mix, and I do not believe it was ever designed with this purpose in mind. It is a tool for reducing the sibilance region in human voices, which mics often exaggerate, and is used on...- Strangelove424

MQA: Revolutionary British streaming technology
Yep, if those kinds of media giants are working together on something it rarely is for the benefit of the consumer. There's plenty of ways for them to distribute high res music that would not involve the use of a proprietary decoder in both hardware and software. If MQA's dog is high res...- Strangelove424

Playback is same as or better. You have the ability to buy the same reference class equipment they do. Which are typically quite competitive in price as well. But audiophiles rarely go that route for aesthetics and sound signature reasons, finding flat gear somewhat boring sounding (and I don't...- Strangelove424

Resolution or sample rate really aren't a limiting factor. People have trouble telling noise floors lower than 12bit, and two samples can reproduce any sound wave. That means We simply don't need any more data to reconstruct all the audible parts of music. You don't hear 1/0s, you hear the dac's...- Strangelove424

Flac on DBPoweramp
Definitely convoluted, and despite all its complexity doesn't handle scratched CDs well. Sometimes 99.99% copy isn't important, and you're just trying to get the dang file in the computer somehow! But for bit perfection freaks, it's a decent free option.- Strangelove424

Why Do Multibit Dacs need to be left on??
The reasoning for leaving amps or dacs on is to maintain the temperature of electrical components which operate more efficiently at their normal running temps. This was especially true for tube amps, which needed to heat up a filament in order to amplify. SS amps don't rely on heat and gas (or a...- Strangelove424
