How are DT770's supposed to sound?
I really liked your Plato's cave analogy. I would never think to see that out of academia. Here's a thread from which you might benefit. I happened to have posted here and just noticed the similarities. Consider... reconsidering after you've thread the thread...- philcheon

Want to get rid of Beats, and get something new.
I believe I recently read an Amazon reviewer who remarks that there is no reason to buy the XB500 over the XB700 whether or not cost is an issue. Then again, this is an Amazon reviewer, and unless they're a head-fi member with a decent number of posts, we don't have anything to go on besides...- philcheon

How are DT770's supposed to sound?
I'm guessing since you listen to dubstep that you should find a track that is ripped to FLAC or similar. Newer music tends to have been recorded such that they are high fidelity... but since dubstep is produced almost entirely by computer (and hence, isn't as likely to exhibit the same kind of...- philcheon

Want to get rid of Beats, and get something new.
Quote: Yes indeed, headphone amps can be rather surprisingly expensive. As far as amps go, why don't you get a portable amp? There are a few amps out there that do not noticeably color the sound, but can provide extra juice. I don't know what your sources are, so I'm sure a nice amp...- philcheon

How are DT770's supposed to sound?
Just a couple quick comments. I saw those particular Sony headphones at a Sony outlet not too long ago. They were selling a whole bunch of refurbs and the bass was pretty insane. The seal with those massive headphones delivered a great isolation, and the environment was pretty quiet...- philcheon

Building a setup
No offense, but your entire explanation just became very simple. I will take your advice and find a decent receiver then. 30 dollars isn't much of a dent, either. Although, the only problem with an AV receiver is their size in comparison.- philcheon

AKG K701 Retermination/Recabling
Yes, exactly. I have this habit of not completely finishing forum posts and get distracted, then come back to type them. There's a rather obvious break in thought process. But yes, what I mean to say is that recabling with pure silver on cheap 20 dollar portables doesn't make an...- philcheon

Building a setup
BotByte: I never said I will be using the K701 as a mobile headphone. I have other, cheaper headphones for taking outside my home. What I was looking for, I found in your post: a USB DAC. The HRT Music Streamer 2 will fill that purpose. I needed a go between from my computer to...- philcheon

Building a setup
I'm looking to invest in an amp first, DAC later (if discrete). I will be building the basic system over a period of one to four months, which comes out to a flexible budget of around 600 dollars. If a few things I am trying to sell, sell quickly and at a good price, it may be cut down to only...- philcheon

Building a setup
Calling all Head-fi members! Just kidding. Alright, so I'm getting more and more immersed into the world of high end audio, and for practicality, have chosen headphones over speaker systems. Ultimately, I'm going to eventually want to build a proper system for high end...- philcheon

Hairline cracks in AKG K240 MkII?
Quote: They seemed completely fine in all pictures I had seen, and on arrival, that large crack was very small. Almost impossible to see. Now it's as obvious as ever, and I'm thinking of looking into the price of buying some small parts to see if I can't service it myself. I baby all my...- philcheon

AKG K701 Retermination/Recabling
While I appreciate the various outlooks on my possible recabling jaunt, I will likely go the way of trying to find the K702 and the Q701 for comparison. I'm spoiled by the K240 MkII's, which are considered "professional level," which explains why they and the K702 have detachable cables and the...- philcheon

Hairline cracks in AKG K240 MkII?
After finding the exploded diagram on AKG's website: http://www.akg.com/mediendatenbank2/psfile/datei/17/k240mkII480ee87ea3594.pdf Part 13 has the hairline fractures, but the diagram makes it appear this part is mostly nonessential. Hopefully, the rest of the damage (not including...- philcheon

Hairline cracks in AKG K240 MkII?
Upon opening the left earpiece (I had trouble trying to remove the sticker on the right earpiece so I didn't bother), a couple pieces of plastic fell out as I removed the center screw. Plastic had broken off! I can imagine the original owner had dropped this pair of headphones and neglected to...- philcheon

Hairline cracks in AKG K240 MkII?
These were from a private seller. He had a listing on ebay (and I also happened to find his craigslist listing for the same headphones). Transaction was over Paypal. That's clearly a dead-end. By blutak, you mean Blu-Tack? Like the putty used to stick paper onto walls? I'd figure a...- philcheon

Hairline cracks in AKG K240 MkII?
Has anyone noticed on any pair of headphones, specifically K240's? Given, mine were a slightly used pair, but small hairline cracks have developed along the housing near the earpads/earcups, and it doesn't seem to be an issue anywhere else I've looked. Perhaps I can call in warranty for...- philcheon

AKG K701 Retermination/Recabling
Well, that hits the nail on the head. I'm surprised I didn't think of just saying that I was thinking of a detachable cable. Need advice on getting headphone
I'm a new member too! I came here looking for a pair of great headphones that could replace speakers in my tiny dorm room in college. I can share a few things you might find useful. I'm assuming since you want open-back headphones that you'll be using these mostly at home or in...- philcheon

AKG K701 Retermination/Recabling
While I plan to acquire K701's, there is one reason for concern that makes me second guess myself occasionally. I have AKG K240 MkII's and one of the best features IMO is the fact that the cables are "modular," that is, the headphones have a port where I can remove the cable. The K701's...- philcheon

Good headphones for < $150?
I have managed to do some research and found that the AKG K240 MkII are apparently bouncing around the market and are a good set of headphones. There's definitely that "looks" factor in there too, and the fact that they come in at 70-110 dollars lightly used makes them a good candidate for me...- philcheon

Good headphones for < $150?
I should probably clarify what I would use the headphones for as well: I usually listen to rock and related subgenres, but I am also a big electronic fan, so while I don't need head-shaking, teeth-chattering bass, I would like clear, low basses and good clarity with highs. Some of my...- philcheon

Good headphones for < $150?
Hey everyone. I just joined head-fi.org! I was looking around for a pair of good headphones that I could take to college that I can use to immerse myself in my music (no noise canceling required). I'm looking for a pair of circumaural headphones under 150 dollars, although if there can be...- philcheon
