Definitely not random. Really the double tap that wakes it, both on the screen and on the ring button. Although I do think it also did some random waking up earlier, but not anymore now, maybe after I turned it off and on again? Maybe a factory reset would stop the double tap from functioning...

I noticed this too, yesterday. Hadn't seen it before, so I presume it came with firmware 1.1, but if it's a feature it should be optional and I can't find it in the settings, so looks more like unintentional behavior, aka a bug.

Can simply be measured, right? Plug in a TRRS cable and use a multimeter to measure on the other end if the L- and R- are connected or not.

I can see a tiny strip of light like that if I look at the unit from the side like in that picture. Absolutely not visible from the front. Well within tolerances as far as I'm concerned. Don't know about the battery, I'm not shaking my unit.

Why?

Not as I see it. The S on a TRS has the same length as the RS on a TRRS. The left socket is TRRS, so when a TRS is plugged into it, L- and R- will be connected inside the headphone. When a TRS is then plugged into the right socket, L- and R- on the 4.4 mm end will end up connected.

I wouldn't try this. If you look at the diagram Leonarfd posted, the sleeve of a TRS will short the L- and R-. It won't damage the headphones, but might damage the balanced source.
